In the video I watched on Campus Censorship by Greg Lukianoff, there were many profound truths that astounded me. In this video, he went over how colleges across the United States have codes that violate the first amendment rights established in the Constitution. Also such topics discussed were how through the ban of first amendment rights from American colleges, I found out that this is one of the leading causes of American discourse as well as education success in American colleges. Many other topics included was that Universities should allow certain debates on all issues, whether they be environmentalism, immigration, or affirmative action.
Colleges in the United states are far more closed minded than we might have thought. In the United states alone, according to Greg Lukianoff, seventy-one percent of colleges have codes that violate the principles of the first amendment. This to me is completely ludicrous. Colleges are supposed to be public centers of free thought in where you can express yourself freely and liberally. Yes, when a student pushes their way into the college doorway, they expect to acquire a high level of education. But as well, they expect to voice their opinion in one place where they can actually be heard.
Another topic that Greg Lukianoff went over that highly disturbed me was the fact that American discourse has risen, due to the fact of limited freedom of speech in American colleges. I believe that statement to be true because for example, the college dropout rate in the United states is extremely high. Based on a report by the Education trust in 2005, a Washington non-profit based organization, only sixty-three percent of enrolled college students will earn a degree. And thirty- seven percent of students will drop out before finishing or else flunk out of their programs of study. Are colleges being turned into probation centers?
Another topic that Greg Lukianoff went over in his video on Campus Censorship in the United States was the fact that instead of colleges punishing students for debate on issues that face our country, they should be encouraging them instead. Lukianoff is right in the fact that if colleges allowed student to debate more issues such as environmentalism, immigration, and affirmative action, we might actually see a change in our society. College students are the workforce of tomorrow and they will shape economic and political policy for years to come. They will invent the next hydro car. They will come to a means of compromise on immigration. If a single hispanic mother is able in the future to afford to send her children to college without being 60,000 dollars in debt, oh wouldn’t that be splendid!
