According to the socialists who make Ubuntu Linux, a new version of their somewhat popular operating system is to be released tomorrow: It’s been just over a year since Microsoft released Windows Vista ? the question on everybody’s lips is have the Ubuntu people managed to catch up with Microsoft’s flagship product? Is Linux finally ready for the desktop or is it still little more than a plaything for unemployed nerds?
Linux, as we all know, began life as a hobbyist operating system ? invented by conspiracy theorist Richard ?Stalin? Stallman so that he could have an operating system that was just as unfriendly as confusing as his word-processor ?e-Macs?.
In recent years Linux has suffered a major set-back following the shock revelations form SCO Group, whose software had been stolen wholesale and incorporated into illegal distributions of Linux. For the past five years, the overwhelming effort of Linux developers has gone into removing SCO’s intellectual property from the Linux operating system ? but as the threat of litigation has subsided many users are asking once-again if Linux is a serious contender?
Unfortunately, the answer is mostly a no: We downloaded the latest ?beta? of Ubuntu’s operating system and were once again very disappointed: It looks almost exactly the same as the previous version lacking any of the visual style, reliability and advanced features of the industry standard Windows Vista.
We decided to look under the hood of Linux to see if this ‘Samizdat’ operating system concealed any notable secrets. According to the anonymous ?.t.xt? file that came with the disk this OS had a new feature called ?Completely Fair Scheduler? - after a great deal of research we were able to conclude that this was an attempt to bring the principles of Marxism onto your PC. The Linux nerds are upset that some people have faster computers than others, so this new feature takes processing power from fast computers and donates them to people who have slower computers.
If you object to this communism, tough luck: The so-called ?Completely Fair Scheduler? is incorporated into the ?kernel? ( which is the Linux equivalent of the MS Dos layer in older versions of windows). This ?feature? alone is enough to frighten serious users away from the upstart operating system. Unfortunately there is far more cause for alarm:

Simply click on Setup.exe and most installers will instantly deploy your chosen software, sometimes with cool bonus productivity apps that enhance your browsing experience. In comparison with Microsoft’s common-sense approach, pandemonium reigns on the Linux platform.
The only way to install software is via a tool called the ?package manager? which is confusingly also called ?Synaptic?. This works according to a similar principle as a communist super-market: You have a limited range of software which has been chosen on a purely ideological basis rather than functionality. If you want to ?think different?, it’s tough-luck again: Another obvious fail for the ‘contender’.
To make matters worse, in order to install an application you must be ?root? which entails memorizing a series of confusing passwords. By contrast Windows allows any user to install the applications they need to do their work ? a wise productivity gain that endears the flexible NT platform to IT departments the world over.
Finally we notice that Ubuntu Linux is the first OS to come bundled with software that runs Bit-torrent: As we previously reported this is software used by European pirates to rip off American industry and steal bandwidth from telcos to distribute porn. Once again we should compare Window’s sensible bundling strategy, in which only basic system tools such as a web-browser are integrated into the core-operating system. What on earth possessed the Linux kernel developers to add ?low-level? support for BitTorrent, unless of course this is a European plan to incriminate us all.
In summary, Ubuntu Linux is still not yet ready for the Desktop. Our recommendation is to take a rain check on this release: Commercial and educated power-users will no doubt avoid this system because of it’s dangerous ideological bias, lack of quality software and out-dated technology.
We do feel that the new release of Ubuntu Linux will have moderate success playing to it’s core-audience: It will provide an entertaining diversion for hackers in-between prison sentences.

Acctualy you can install other programs on ubuntu with ‘deb’ files , you can find at alot of linux suitable sites if you havn’t found them in synaptic. ‘deb’ files is to linux like msi and setup.exe is for windows
If you can run executable files in your windows with just one double click, you can also run viruses in the same way.

Are you serious? I use Ubuntu Linux 8.04 and it works fine for me. I can also run Windows software on it (ever heard of Wine?). Linux is not a Communist product actually it is a variance of Unix one of the best OS. Just because you have difficulty using it doesn’t mean that others cant. If you want you can disable the root password (didn’t know that, did you?). Your article looks more like an MS Windows add or a capitalist anti-communist, out of place, rant. Do you get money from Microsoft and are afraid of free software? Microsoft shell their products way too expensive and have that ANNOYING activation thing. Another mistake you made is that Linux is limited in programs. My Linux comes with thousand of programs on the other hand MS Windows doesn’t even include the Office with it (you must buy it separately).
By the way I am a Christian and a very strong believer in our Lord and it saddens me that you are using our Faith to make political comments and do propaganda in favour of an International Cooperation. This is why people mock us and our Faith. And as we mentioned free products and sharing why don’t you open your Bible on Acts 2…

There is not ANY “only way to install software” in Gnu-Linux. Synaptic is JUST something Gnu-Linux have that Windows doesn’t.
Anyway, Synaptic just INCLUDES selected software. It doesn’t means you CAN’T install anything witch were not selected by Ubuntu’s developers…
There is a lot of “depots” : anyone can create a depot, and people just has to add the depots on a list from Synaptic, and clic on the software they want to have.
No, Windows Vista is an operating system witch makes you use applications that you may don’t want (Internet Explorer, MSN Messenger). In Gnu-Linux, you can freely choose your web browser, your desktop environment… your totally free to choose… or to don’t ! In Windows, you just can choose additional software.
The “setup.exe” method exists also on Gnu-Linux… come on, just look at the Symphony Suit from IBM ! In Gnu-Linux, you also have to click on a “setup.exe” (well, setup.bin or setup.sh I don’t remember), and you have an installation JUST LIKE on Windows.
Why it’s not the case of every software ? Because the package method is simply… better : it’s easier for the user to install, to download, and to share !
I’m not an hacker. I’m just an user - well, I do know some stuff about computer : but I have two friends using Ubuntu witch don’t know anything about computers. They just want to switch the PC on and to listen music, watch movies, play games and surf on the Internet.
And, as it was said before… Wine allow users to use applications designed for Windows. Freely.
So I will finish in two statements :
First, as said IBM : we can’t protect our data building walls, and hiding the code. Gnu-Linux is what truly resolves the issue.

It’s true : Microsoft have done some greats things… but look at know : WinFS is just an idea taken from ReiserFS (from free software world, and used by Gnu-Linux - well, WinFS will of course be slower after some time, while ReiserFS will keep the same speed). The “3D Desktop”… also comes from Gnu-Linux world (but on Windows, it takes 1024Mo of Ram for one effect, while in Gnu-Linux it takes 256Mo of Ram from between 40-60 effects…
And i don’t say it as a free software friend : I like Apple. Hem, I mean, I like the Apple’s products ! It’s true they are, in some way, worst than Microsoft, but at least they’re trying to do… new things.

In the case you were serious (and you are so funny that I have serious doubts) : I’m french. I’m using Ubuntu (or I used to, until I bought a creative sound card) which is the best open source operating system, and would be the more used if constructors contributed to this project.
I’m not going to give a deep analysis, cause you are so deeply convinced in your belief that it’s useless to bring you back to reason. But I’d like to precise that (if you were serious) I would feel deeply insulted by such allegations without any foundation. Well there is your first mistake, Beta means it’s not ready for the general public, IE. YOU!

Step one: go to the System menu at the top. Step two: go into the Preferences sub menu of the system menu. Step three: Select “Desktop Effects”. Now I’m using Ubuntu 7.04 so I don’t know exactly how far these features have gone, but that’s aside from the fact that I still know that Windows Vista lacks any cool Window effects or even multiple Virtual desktops that even Windows XP had (desktop manager power toy). CompizFusion is even more advanced adding in Beryl’s visual effects into the mix. For office apps, yes Ubuntu is a year or so behind using Open office. Now assuming you have a Windows Dual boot with Ubuntu (I’ve never tried this myself but I assume it works if it works with Zune) you can install a program called WINE (Wine Is Not an Emulator), navigate to your windows partition and run MS office from there. Ubuntu is immune to viruses having the original UAC completely intigraded into the system, and treating every user on the computer as a network connection (IE, if you alter certain network settings, you cannot launch any programs until you log off/on). Now all of this is from my limited Linux experience, I haven’t used the system all that much and only use it when I cannot find a program for Windows (one that I can’t pirate anyhow.)

WRONG. The NT kernel is a still very powerful and very useful piece of coding. It was an incredible piece of code that was *far* ahead of it’s time when it was started in 91. Having all the basic functions built into something like MinWin: 100 files, 20 megs hdd space, 40 megs Ram and using the new Command line interface Windows 7 Milestone 2 (which I’ve used) it kicks Unix’s butt all up and down as it eliminates the need to remember exact commands and also has Unix’s internet abilities, you can host simple http servers to get a UI of the OS, it has VHD file format capabilities (VHD is MS’s Virtual Hard Drive file format used with Virtual PC) you can technically have any OS to date running on top of MinWin, imagine XP with 4 Gigs of Ram minus 40 megs. I still look for the NT system base to go a *long* way and I expect Unix to still go a long way as well.

New things huh? WRONG! There hasn’t been like a single change in iPods or iTunes since Apple took the market (sound familiar, MS with the Desktop OS). Apple, although less known for popularity reasons, actually copies as much if not more than MS. Remember Apple crying about Instant Search copying Spotlight? Well it’s true that Spotlight coming out with the fast search with Tiger did come out before “Vista” but Instant Search came out with “Longhorn Beta 2″ which was developed *long* before Tiger, in fact I think Beta 2 was in development with Jaguar in 2002 if I remember correctly, had it not been for the aptly named “Summer of Worms” then Vista might have graced us as early as 03 or 04. Also Aero, that according to Apple is a ripped off version of Aqua also debuted in Beta 2, and the cries about the Gadget VS Widget thing, Apple stole Widgets from Konfabulator so they have *NO* room to talk. Then Apple stuns me yet again with the Macbook Air, having the “new and powerful” ability to use another computers CD drive as it’s own because all Apple did to make it so thin was pull out everything that anybody used. This “new” feature is actually a simple rip of something Windows users have had since, god the first networks, it’s called Mapping a network drive. Stacks in the new Leopard dock, well Windows has had that (or something like that) since Win 98, drag a folder to the taskbar and *poof* there be a new menu. Apple, who says MS is so bad about this and that, has denied all users of a big wish since the release of the Mac OS system (10 or not). That’s PC compatibility. Apple could *quickly* take MS’s spotlight quickly. And despite the ease it could be ported (having a Unix core, basically any Linux driver would work with some tweaking) they have left PC users to create hacks of the system like those created by the x86 project that kinda *half way* work. (Look up Mac OS for PC on thepiratebay.org or even google.)
It’s as simple as this, no OS is perfect, in fact all of them are far from, Linux lacks the professional support and ease of use (aka, most people are afraid of the terminal) to become mainstream. Mac OSX is *way* to suck on their own hardware which is way expensive to ever become dominant. Finally Windows has security issues and has sloppy coding because of the lack of competition to drive development (Mac OSX has 80 million lines of code and Vista has 40 million and yet Vista has about the same requirements from the hardware when in theory it should run faster). It all depends on what the user is comfortable with, if your comfortable needing to run 15 security programs, okay. If you comfortable coding your own programs and looking up help forums constantly, alrightly then. If your comfortable paying 3000 bucks for a computer 2000 dollars overpriced, be my guest. If your comfortable with the Pros and Cons of each direction, I have no argument, so long as you *EDUCATE* yourself about each system and realize that no one system is “perfect”. Believe it or not, your like the only Apple user who has ever admitted Apple even *has* short comings and that alone I condone you on. Most Apple users get trapped in this invincible little bubble where their mac can do no wrong.
Installing programs on windows is a pain, because you need to run each installer seperately, after searching for the installers for a while.
In Ubuntu 8.04 you can use an add/remove programs application that allows you to install and remove multiple programs fairly quickly and it will find all the programs for you, it might confuse Windows users as in this application you can actually add programs like its name implies.
Linux also allows you to chose between various desktop interfacing from simple text based ones, to nice advanced ones that are a lot better than vista, and they don’t take up all your RAM or CPU time either.
And the Completely Fair Scheduler gives programs running on a computer fair CPU time, so its very hard for one program to freeze and end up freezing your computer.
And windows restricts installing most programs to administrators only, but some programs can be installed by power-users, including lots of viruses.
Also, alot of torrenting and file sharing is done in the US so don’t go blaming the Europeans.

You know, that it was changed to Uninstall Programs. Also when Linux doesn’t have the deb package sources it can be a pain to install things. The add/remove programs is a simplified user friendly version of Synaptic Package manager.

Using the newest download of Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. Check this out, you can pop the disk in while running windows, and install Ubuntu like a program without a dedicated partition. Now *that* is bloody awesome. I actually didn’t notice that, the last one I had was 7.04 Feisty Fawn.

2)Steve Balmer? Pft, yeah right. Steve is the most single tracked minded person I’ve ever seen. If he had half a brain stem then he’d know that making Microsoft bigger is impossible on it’s current path, universal capability is windows strongest advantage. Making the system totally open as far as formats, program compatibility, Parallel OS’s, and furthering entertainment abilities are what MS should do for windows. Windows should develop a way to run Mac OS on a PC, like a BootCamp. Granted it would be harder as PC hardware is no where near as uniform. Now many people would say “this would whip out windows” NO it actually wouldn’t. Because you’d need Windows to use it’s own version of bootcamp, and as long as windows owns the OEM license, then the company would be fine.
I am a Linux supporter, the system needs a lot of work still, but considering how new it is, it’s really impressing me. I’m just a realist.

How about people drop the entire bloated software groups, Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X.
Switch the the *only* real OS out there, Amiga OS. Hyperion recently released the Amiga OS 4.1 version this year, it will run on the 13 year old hardware of the Amiga 4000 easily and can still play DVDs and videos, listen to music, play games online and off, browse the net, read/write email, all that good stuff that windows, mac, and linux do, but there is a few major differences. Amiga OS can do all this with a 7 mhz processor, 256 k Ram (yes I said k, as in kilobytes of ram, not megabytes or gigabytes), and the entire OS and all it’s full software taking up 250 megs of hard disk space. Now *that* is an operation system, thin, powerful, secure, and most of all, fast. No more clicking IE 4 times to get it to open and 10 minutes later 4 IE windows suddenly pop up, you click it, it’s there immediately. Amiga is *the* standard in elegant coding built all from one type of coding so it pleases STR even :P. I’m very pleased to be able to dust off my old Amiga 2500 (25 mhz processor and 512 kbs RAM) and be able to browse the net on it (granted I had to buy a specially fabricated CD drive an Ethernet port, the original Amiga’s where not made with them).

how much did microsoft pay you to say that? i guess you haven’t used it nor seen it in action… it’s a lot safer and easier to use than any windows ever! it has a well organized menu, unlike windows. it’s a LOOOOOOT easier to install software, using the “add/remove” feature, just a few clicks, the root password and it will make the job alone.
by the way, the need of a root password to install/uninstall software is a cool feature because it prevents unauthorized people to do those tasks, unlike windows, that allows the installation of spyware and viruses.
Also a lot of freeware windows programs come with unuseful toolbars full of spyware.
