Now the drug trade generates annual revenues of $400-500 billion a year.

If you thought that’s a lot of money you’d be right. Now lets think about that a little.

First of all: can that amount of money be moved around the world in cash? If you answered: “No”, you would be right. This amount of money can only flow through the banking system. Which means that banks (read bankers) know of it (bankers may be crooks, but it’s hard to fool them about money matters).

Second question. Suppose you have an industry with a turnover of $400 billion a year, would it need some support from politicians? And would it be able to *get* that support if needed? Well … there are no prizes for guessing “Yes” is the right answer here.

Third question. Would drugs like heroine, cocaine, marihuana etc. fetch the price they currently do if they weren’t illegal? Think of the Prohibition years … what made the alcohol trade profitable, eh? Whoever got “Laws banning the consumption of said commodity” can go to head of class.

Now lets see if we can put this all together, eh? Illegal drugs are immensely profitable ($400 – $500 billion a year) only because they are illegal. Drugs money is profitable to bankers because it needs to buy their services. Bankers need political cover to ensure that (a) the trade remains profitable and (b) they aren’t jailed. Only politicians have the power to ensure that drugs stay illegal and that somehow all the Justice departments in the world fail to trace cash flows of $400 billion a year.

So there you have it. Every time you see a bible basher or a redneck politician thundering about War on Drugs you can be sure they’re well rewarded for it. In other words you hear drug interests talking. People don’t say: “Money talks” for nothing.

Also, when you hear any “friend of the people” politician talking about War on Drugs, remember just what people he’s such a friend of. It will be the banking people and the drugs cartel people.

It’s a very democratic system: a one dollar one vote.

So forget about (a) getting rid of drug production, trade, or consumption anytime soon, and (b) any measure that would decrease the profitability of drugs trafficking (like legalization).

First off I respect your opinion but make sure you can back up ANYTHING you post with definitive factual data. With out it everything you say might make you look stupid, and I fear that is exactly what has taken place.

I am a biomedical scientist as well as a “born again.” I am also perplexed by current laws which permit the use of alcohol (which is very very dangerous even with responsible use) and criminalize Cannabis. I don’t get it. I used to bar tend. I hate drunks I can’t tell you how many brawls I had to break up and how many people I had to kick out of my bar because alcohol ALWAYS turns people into raving lunatics. But suggest prohibition to any republican in office and they would probably oppose the notion and they clutch their favorite scotch. Now I had equal exposure to stoners. Other than being very very messy, I have never seen anyone acting disruptive nor violent. Not EVER. However people thump their bibles and say using Marijuana is sinful. Where exactly is that in scripture. Because I’ve read it and I don’t see it. I do see do not drink to become a drunkard, but I do not see don’t smoke a plant and become stoned.

My grandfather (a retired Assemblies of God preacher) has friends visit him from time to time and you know how people act around authority figures in the church. Ya know the church face and all that. Well one girl explained what a miraculous experience she had when Jesus released her from her addiction to Marijuana. Immediately I was nauseated because I grandfather was thinking Jesus did this great thing but in reality the girl was looking for attention and LIED to my grandfather. How do I know this? Well as a biomedical research I’ve been enlighted to scientifically proven benefits of compounds isolated in cannabis. I also evaluated publications addressing addiction. Guess what? No such thing. Marijuana is no more addictive than eating your favorite doughnut after church. Drinking coffee is much more addictive than cannabis use will ever be. So she wasn’t really addicted to anything, and therefore the fact that she stopped isn’t that miraculous at all.

I say, either prohibit alchohol or lagalize Cannabis because of the two there is no comparison. Alcohol is much worse.

On the side of christians, I recall in Romans Paul says not to do anything nor consume anything that your brother “who is weak in faith” thinks is unclean. So in an effort to prevent the alienation and potential misstep of your brother, don’t do what he thinks is unclean although in reality its fine. This is why I do not use cannabis or alchohol anymore. BUT I do not think cannabis use is evil AND I think that your faith, Shelley, IS WEAK.
