Does the world really need OLPC?

Friends,

Have you heard of a new project called “OLPC”, otherwise known as “One Laptop Per Child” – it’s the latest crazy product to come out of silicon valley, and the Linux people’s last ditch attempt to get anybody to use their product. Most computer experts know that Linux is not yet ready for the desktop, and I guess the Linux crowd know that too which is why they have chosen to put it on laptops designed for children. They cynically suspect that a younger audience will be prepared to accept a laptop which cannot play their favourite games.

olpc3.jpg

The “state of the art” OLPC – this machine is primative compared to a modern Windows Vista laptop, so why are Linux fan-boys claiming that it is the best ever computer?

When I say “laptop”, this OLPC machine looks nothing at all like my modern Windows Vista based laptop. Vista is a marvel of modern American Christian engineering which allows me to run the world’s best software such as Microsoft Word (which I’m using to write to you now), and Microsoft Excel to do our Church accounts. AtShelleyTheRepublican .com we even use Microsoft Access to compile dossiers on suspected terrorists in our neighborhood. None of this would be possible without Windows Vista Home Premium Edition and Microsoft Office.

lbef.jpg

Is this what kids want? A laptop that cannot play great Christian games like “Left Behind: Eternal Forces” or Derek Smart’s Battlecruiser 3000AD. We also note that the OLPC project does not come with a standard Bible reference utility. Why have the OLPC developers rejected Jesus?

Unfortunately the OLPC does not run Windows or Office, and lacks any of the thousands of programs familiar to Windows power-users. Unfortunately due to short-sighted planning there is no way theOLPC users will ever be able to rectify this problem because contrary to the spirit of Open-source the OLPC does not include any programming features. It is not compatible with Microsoft Visual Basic.net the world’s best development system.

olpc1.jpg

An early prototype of the OLPC designed for African villages. It’s designers attempted to save money by using rows of switches instead of keys, naturally this plan back-fired they way all Linux projects do. People were not prepared to accept an overtly anti-christian product.

The makers of the controversial Linux OS Program are currently being sued for over $3Bn in damages by SCO group, one of the companies that invented the Minix operating system from which Linux was copied. Linux’s dirty little secret known only to a few free-thinkers in the computer business is that it incorporates stolen SCO technologies such as “RCU”, a patented military-grade secret that is now being exported at a discounted rate to America’s enemies. Next time Al-Queda want to write a computer-virus you can be sure that they are using American-made RCU to help send porn to your family’s home computer.

contiki-01.png

Get ready for an explosive desktop experience… not! OLPC’s 2 dimensional user-interface reminds us of computing technology that is almost 20 years old. Why have the OLPC team turned their back on progress?

To me, this all seems like a big missed opportunity. What on earth is the purpose of providing low-cost laptops to the 3rd world other than to train up the next generation of outsourced laborers to do work for America. Unfortunately the OLPC does not include anything useful such as VB or call-centre training software.? I just don’t see how we benefit from this technological hand-out.

We at STR have a better suggestion. Why not take all the funds for the OLPC project and use it for something genuinely helpful. We propose a global bible-distribution / abstenance program which will teach people how to get to heaven and keep potential terrorist weapons like the OLPC out of dangerous foreign hands.

Yours in Christ,

Tristan J. Shuddery

reminds us of computing technology that is almost 20 years old Tristan, you should know that a Commodore 64 is 20 years old :)

  2. Tristan Shuddery March 23rd, 2007 5:26 AM

Yes, the OLPC has approximately the same power as a Commodore 64. Why would kids want these things?

  3. Marc March 23rd, 2007 5:45 AM

    No, not even approximately:

    Key figures:
    C64 OLPC
    CPU (Mhz) ~1 400
    RAM (MB) 0.064 128
    ROM (MB) 0.02 512
    Colors 16 64′000′000

And, to answer your question: Because they don’t have anything else and certainly cannot afford windows, since a single-user-license costs more than the pay for one year of food.

By the way: even if Microsoft wanted to provide the OS – let’s say a very basic Windows – it wouldn’t work. Windows is simply to memory-greedy when using “modern features”

The generation-one machine?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ¥s core electronics begin with the 400Mhz AMD Geode processor. There are 128MB of dynamic RAM and 512MB of SLC NAND flash memory on board.

  4. Mean March 23rd, 2007 5:51 AM

“Yes, the OLPC has approximately the same power as a Commodore 64. Why would kids want these things?”

If they have that kind of power then they can’t run windows vista. And they chose this computer because they cant affor a real one. Then you might ask why they are so por. The awnser is that god is punishing them for ther sinnful life.

“a global bible-distribution” Is a greate ide becous if we can give them god. God will solv the rest of ther problems.

Well, having been in the computer industry for over 20 years, I can see you are purposely injecting errant information and falsifications in an attempt at parody. Unfortunately this one is too easy to see through and falls flat as 10 minutes of google searching disproves the whole article. Nice try though.

    Hilarious.

But as posted above: You can do better. But then this blog is not made for intelligent people, as they all know what is true and what is not.
But giving the poor buggers that can’t afford a good education some misguided and falsified Information will truly help your cause. May all people get dumb so they vote for Bush 3rd aka Jeb. (Luckily he’s not running for office this election)

    A well educated german.

It sounds Shelley like you are taking the law into your own hands and in doing so, you are becoming what you loathe, a religious fanatic! I hope to God I never have to meet someone so intolerant as you.

Friend, defending America from terrorism is the duty of all Patriotic Americans. Al-Queda double-agents are pretending to be regular citizens. We need total information awareness in order to compile lists of possible suspects, just in case there is another terrorist attack.

We make lists of people who have been speaking and acting strangely and we log it in our MS Access database, ready for when the CIA will need this information.

I do not see a problem in supporting our law-enforcement community. The question is, why do you. Are YOU a terrorist. I know you will not answer that question honestly so I am putting you on my database anyway.

    I ai?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ¥nt sayin I know all about computers becose I do?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ¥nt.
But I want to thank you Mr Shuddery Sir for warnin GOOD AMERICANS not to buy this for our kids. I have a US MICROSOFT and it is a fine machine built in AMERICA by AMERICANS.

Thank you for your kind words. That is all we at STR wish to do. We seek to raise awareness of facts and issues that might harm your family and divert your faith from the one true God. What could be wrong with that?

  12. Marc March 23rd, 2007 10:07 AM

so, i that case, please include me in your database.. My mother-tongue isn’t US-English and I strongly dislike your current administration. That should be enough to enter it :)

i think you?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ¥re mad. i agree with ?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ?dave?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ¥ (see prev. comment), you seem to be a fanatic, intolerant conspirascist. have you no respect for your fellow neighbours? some of whom i presume are citizens of your great nation like yourself. what makes you feel you have the right to say, “that person looks a bit odd”, “hey, you?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ¥re right, they’re probably a terrorist”. i would be very interested to hear what your criteria for ’suspect/terrorist behaviour’ is? bright coloured shirts? alternative medicine? facial hair? i have a feeling that just by voicing an opinion other than yours, i may have already met it. are you sure this is not more of a reaction to a fear of different living, values and cultures? free thinking? what are you doing monitoring people’s personal lives? are you an expert? have you received any training on “terrorist identification”. you have no right. if you seriously suspect something, why not report it to an authority. from seeing how easily ?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ?dave?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ¥ found himself on it, your ‘list of terror’ sounds ridiculous, inaccurate, totally useless and pointless. do you think that when ‘the terror’ descends, your law-enforcement community will sift through your whims and suspicions and use it as a major resource to fight terrorism? and come for ‘terrorists’ like dave, and i and all the other people you might have indecently accused. if i terrorist hunting, and i was going only by weird, radical actions and opinions, you would definitely go on my list.

  15. Giles (not a terrorist) March 23rd, 2007 11:12 AM

last line of prev. comment should have read…

if i went terrorist hunting, and i was going only by the observation of weird, radical actions and opinions, you would definitely go on my list.

also, i just noticed your blog is called the ‘freedom blog’. now thats funny.

My God, your terrorist detection skills are truly one of a kind, have you considered a job in counter terrorism? Now you’ve discovered my true identity, my name can reside among the names of other true heroes of Islam, other martyrs.

It can sit in your tiny Microsoft database set up no doubt by avid viewers of Desperate Housewives, a show which glorifies the violation of peoples privacy and basic human rights. I can only hope that the streets in your racist/ignorant neighborhood equivalent of ‘Wisteria Lane’ run red with the blood of you idiots.

  20. Mr P March 23rd, 2007 1:49 PM

    So funny !!!!

    1) Even if you want to buy one , I’m not sure that is possible , they will not sell it to you , you are not a poor child …
    2) The cost of this laptot is less than $100 which is the first reason of its creation.
    3) It’s a very resistant laptot adapted to hard condition of living…
    4) Give me one thing you do , except 3D-game , that we can’t do on those computer …

  21. SRP March 23rd, 2007 2:39 PM

    Wrong Mr P

People in the US can buy an OLPC PC for $200.

$100 going to your PC you purchased and the other $100 donated for a laptop going to one of the children over seas.

Other than that I think you nailed it down…

It never amazes me at how ignorant this website is. This is why uneducated hicks shouldn’t be allowed on the interweb.

“Just remember if these crazy liberals ever try and use logic and common sense to try and sway you from god, close your eyes, cover your ears and say to your self… JESUS JESUS JESUS and all will be right again.”

If you think he has knowledge in his brain (does he even have a brain?), then you must be the stupidest creature ever to have walked the surface of the earth, except for George Bush of course.

    I eat hamsters, love Mr.X

  23. Frederik Hertzum March 23rd, 2007 5:09 PM

    1) The project is aimed for people who can’t afford electricity, even if it was available. They wouldn’t want a computer that even resembles my file server (AMD Athlon 750 MHz) as it would require a battery the size of a car to use. Try winding that up with a crank.
    2) The claim that Linux is not ready for the desktop is EXTREMLY subjective. I have personally used a Linux based operating system (Fedora Core and others) for years as my only desktop. So has my computer illeterate girlfriend, who couldn’t figure out how to use Windows.
    3) If you think that you computer is made in the US, you are as dumb as a doorknob. Almost all parts for a computer are manufactured in south east asia. MS Windows is designed in the US and major parts of it is properbly also written in the US, but expect a lot of it to be outsourced to countries like India.
    4) Games are not christian, muslim, hindu and do not belong to any other religion.
    5) You bitch about “Linux” lacking proper christian programmes (by christian programmes, I assume you mean programmes that have some relevance to christian users), as if your primary OS has these programmes. To date, I have only seen one operating system which had this (which is a “linux” operating system — Ubuntu CE) and I have not seen one commercial operating system with the option to install it as extra packages. Almost all “linux” operating systems do.
    6) You must be as dumb as a wet piece of bread on a hot sunny day. The C64 is ~20 years old (if not older) and had. The C64 ran at 1MHz, where as the OLPC computer runs 400Mhz and a far more effecient core — meaning that it runs a hell (oups, am I terrorist now?) of a lot faster. Memory wise I won’t even try to compare the two.
    7) I don’t want a bible and trust me — teaching people that abstenance is the best contraception is plain stupid. Humans are biological machines and biological machines want to multiply.

    “abstenance”

Even my best friends- a Jewish gay guy and a German immigrant who speaks English as well as I do- know how to spell abstinence. Get a spell-checker, ma’am.

Oh, by the way- as a Christian, it is not my duty to pass judgment but to love and accept, and thus I will not condemn you…but I beg you to see the overall message of LOVE in the bible.

It makes you just laugh to read all those people who cant afford a real computer. and it makes me spew to read those hypocrits who say its good for poor people to have linux because they can’t afford anthing better. if you don’t like the system why don’t you go back and live there. don’t infect us with your sub standard operating systems. and don’t try to brainwash children with your intuitive interfaces. its futile because one look at microsofts o/s and you gotta be hooked for life.

There goes an actual picture of the thing:

One more thing: you capitalist USA morons like to think you are freest people on the world. Well, here is your freedom:

It makes me laugh the way you are restricted by the companies to do only what they want you to do. Digital Restrictions Management is the next big thing in capitalism…

  29. frenchie March 25th, 2007 6:47 AM

Next time, show a real picture of the OLPC, not a picture of a VTECH toy.
More seriously, your first articles on “evil = linux” were better.

  30. me March 25th, 2007 8:51 PM

I don’t know if you’re all religious nuts but reading this just proove to me that there is no intelligent life form on this planet … mostly in the USA

  31. tracyanne March 25th, 2007 10:36 PM

Brilliant satire. I especially loved the bit about Microsoft Vista being a marvel of modern American Christian engineering, especially when Microsoft is owned by Atheists like Bill Gates. Absolutely brilliant.

  32. lefty.crupps March 25th, 2007 10:39 PM

    that was hilarious.

i am a linux ‘fanboy’ but i know a good article when i read one. all of the representations about linux are wrong, not arguably but totally, and the OLPC is *not* the hobbled POS toy in the first photo. Yes it has a lower powered processor, that’s why it costs $100 (actually $140 or so right now, i think… economies of scale not yet fully there…). And the Free nature of open source software makes the thing NOT cost another $140+ for MS products.

anyways, funny article. and funny right-wing tone. made the whole argument that much less… convincing.

  33. Stefaniu Criste March 26th, 2007 12:15 AM

    Shelley, you you are pathetic.

Your computer is made in Taiwan or Turkey (maybe by a muslim, yes). Even your ugly website is hosted on a Linux machine, so relax and stop bashing.

The problem with OLPC is not the poor hardware, resources or funny colours, it’s about long-term education. Think of 2 milion kids thinking freely, not infected by Micro$oft’s virus. They will grow up and come with better and free alternatives to your so-beloved-Windows.

You are frightened by any new ideas and try to hide yourself behind the terrorism pretext. I feel pitty for you.

  34. D4n the Agnostic March 26th, 2007 12:44 AM

What? You dopes *haven’t been following* Ubuntu Christian Edition????
    see http://www.whatwouldjesusdownload.com/linuxforchristians/blog.html

Believe it (or don’t), the bible packages are pretty good compared to what you get with Windows Vista.

    A must-have for agnostics and x’tian’s alike.

Very funny article! Thanks for the humor.

  36. Fearon March 26th, 2007 2:24 AM

Are you for real? “Good Christian programmers who created Vista”… Does Vista refuse to play porn as well or just hassle you about getting a DRM licence from God?

“Linux’s last ditch attempt…” Linux has been around since 1991 and isn’t going away. I just installed the latest Back|Track distro (Slackware) and it boots twice as fast as XP. It doesn’t hassle me as much either and is very intuitive.

A virus can be written and compiled on any Windows Vista or any Linux machine… it doesn’t matter.

You obviously lack any real knowledge about technology as evident from your post and thus make yourself look stupid and ignorant for the world to see. Having an opinion is a good thing, trying to spout off about something you don’t understand is at the cost of your own reputation!

  37. freedominator March 26th, 2007 4:43 AM

Shelley the Republican, your kind is the reason why America is rapidly becoming a back water nation. A nation where 30% of the population denies the greatest accomplishment by mankind in the 20th Century. The Moon Landing. The US used to be a country that people admired and was inspired by. In a few short years it has become one of the moast loathed nations on the planet. Your philosophy would be laughable, if it were not so frightening.
The OLPC program actually shines a little light into an increasingly darkening world. A little light from what used to be the greatest nation on Earth. America.

  41. Jack Ripoff March 26th, 2007 3:58 PM

The Linux project development may be around just since 1991, but in practice it is much more older, since it incorporates much code from BSD projects, which in turn have been around since the 70s! The maturity of our code is simply light-years ahead of Microsoft’s code…

“They cynically suspect that a younger audience will be prepared to accept a laptop which cannot play their favourite games.”
    1) What would a kid in a third world country need with video games? They couldn’t afford them if they wanted them, and wouldn’t have the time to play them, with you know, work.
2)There are magical things called emulator: they allow you to play those games as if they were on a native OS system.
“None of this would be possible without Windows Vista Home Premium Edition and Microsoft Office.”
you can make Linux look, smell, feel and run like windows vista, or any windows for that matter. On the office issue, let me give you a program that runs great and is free: Open office, it does everything that MSoffice does for free.
“Unfortunately the OLPC does not run Windows or Office, and lacks any of the thousands of programs familiar to Windows power-users.”
The thing with this argument is that, what third world kid has seen windows? What third world family could afford a computer?
“The makers of the controversial Linux OS Program are currently being sued for over $3Bn in damages by SCO group, one of the companies that invented the Minix operating system from which Linux was copied.”
Everyone and there grandmother knows how much more Microsoft stole from companies like :IBM,Sun,apple(they took the entire orginal apple OS and made it color and sold it). So, before you get on Linux for being immoral, look at microsoft and see there history; they are 10 times more immoral.

Please, write about things you have some knowledge, and don’t make shame for right-wing thinking people anymore. Even better read more The Wisdom Books from Bible. God bless you.

Is this a joke… If it is it’s really in poor taste. The author doesn’t know his/her head from a hole in the ground!

SCO one of the inventors of MINIX. Hummm… Let me check the correct answer on that! NOPE, the inventor would be Andrew Tanenbaum. SCO is nothing more than an black hole of lies and loathing, they screwed themselves when they realized they could make an attempt at trolling.

From what I can read here the author would have the 3rd world stuck picking coffee, soybeans and migratory farm working. I think this view is awfully narrow minded and if you were such a “christian” you would think so too. If you believe this and you believe your God sees all this as the right thing then your God is an ass… Keep your bull where it belongs, in the toilet.

If you want to talk about great software, take a look at the server MS uses along side their Server products. That would BSD, very free and a lot more sturdy and robust than anything MS throws at us. Also (I am no advocate for Tivo) take a look at Tivo, that’s no Microsoft box sitting on your TV…

Before you try to spread your gunk anymore, take a class or two in law and technology, hell take one in religion too!

I nearly threw up reading this article. “Vista is a marvel of modern American Christian engineering which allows me to run the world?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ¥s best software such as Microsoft Word”. You truly make me want to barf.

I’m a long standing christian, a linux geek and an IT support guy. Vista has been nothing but trouble to me. Couldn’t even handle CD burning or wireless hotspots in my university’s infrastructure out of the box. It’s a bloated, poorly coded pile of dung. If this is American engineering, I guess I have little respect for American engineering. Microsoft Word is probably the single program on the planet I’m asked for help with most often = calling it the “world’s best” is either a heinous lie or the most misguided thing I’ve ever heard. The fact that you try to back up Vista and Word by playing the christian card is just revolting, they have nothing at all to do with Jesus or what he was on about.

I’ve never seen this site before today, I can only hope and pray it is a fake. You are giving christians such a bad name I simply have no words to express my disgust.

Don’t try to comment on technology you don’t understand and don’t slam people trying to provide a service to those in need while you misuse the name of God to push a personal agenda.

  50. Jones March 26th, 2007 8:27 PM

    Hey all,

I wouldn’t pay much attention to this article. Why? Because, it just goes to show that ANYONE can post misinformation on the internet.

  51. bailey March 26th, 2007 8:32 PM

Okay, total props. For a second I thought you were serious then I realized nobody could be that lost. Awesome work.

  52. Jason March 26th, 2007 9:06 PM

It’s a satire website people. For those who have yet to realize that just yet, just do a little Googling and you’ll see that anyone who was actually serious wouldn’t make THAT many mistakes in a single article.

  53. Marcus Mouse March 26th, 2007 9:07 PM

OK, a few quick updates to the original poster.

    1) “”Left Behind: Eternal Forces “”
This is hardly a Christian game. The game takes place after the Christian Rapture. Players seek to convert neutral people, but may choose to resort to violence if attacked. When asked about the violence in the game, Left Behind Games responded that every action has a consequence.

So you you represent a group of religious zealots, bringing Christianity to the world, at any cost. Didn’t god say to love your enemies? And spread peace and love, Not kill all the heathen? Maybe I am wrong.

    2) “”Unfortunately the OLPC does not run Windows or Office, and lacks any of the thousands of programs familiar to Windows power-users.”"

This is rather funny, because for years now Linux has incorporated a little program known as Wine (Win-dows E-mulation) Which allows many windows programs to run in the linux environment. Many popular windows applications have, free, linux counterparts, that function as well if not better then their corporate controlled brethren.

    3) It is not compatible with Microsoft Visual Basic.net the world?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ¥s best development system.

Well i don’t know about the “world’s best” but it is a development system. They have already ported the .net architecture to linux, as well as having a new compiler out that allows programs using up to Visual Basic 6 to compile their applications on linux and run them in the KDE or Gnome environment.

There are many many more holes in this blog, but I will leave them, I think the majority of it has already been picked apart. Lastly contrary to SCO’s assertions, SCO is not the owner of the Unix copyrights. The intellectual property always belonged to Novell, Who is backing the linux community, claiming that it never sold the copyrights of Unix to SCO.

In a Ruling in the week of 4/03/06
“The court finds that SCO failed to comply with the court?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ¥s previous discovery-related Orders, that SCO acted willfully, that SCO?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ¥s conduct has resulted in prejudice to IBM, and that this result ?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ¨ the inability of SCO to use the evidence at issue to prove its claims ?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ¨ should come as no surprise to SCO,” said Dale’s judgment.

“In addition, the court finds that neither particularized findings on an item-by-item basis nor an evidentiary hearing is required to make these determinations. The court, therefore, affirms and adopts the Magistrate Judge?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ¥s June 28, 2006 Order in its entirety.”

Kimball also ruled that SCO must go through another case with Novell before the remainder of the IBM case is tried. Some of SCO’s copyright claims over Unix result from a 1995 deal with Novell, but that company claims that it did not sell SCO copyrights to Unix. Kimball has ruled that that case must be tried before the remaining issues in the IBM case.

Anyone wanting additional information could go http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCO_v._IBM_Linux_lawsuit that has a fairly accurate description of the lawsuit against linux and the trials thus far.

So before you go praising Microsoft, Note that Microsoft is implementing DMR into everything they sell not, they have been in violation of the international privacy act and fined several million dollars due to it. Nearly all European countries; France, Brittan, Spain, Russia, China, Japan. Have Removed Microsoft from their government offices and replaced them with Mac, or Linux Machine due to Microsoft’s Privacy infringement. The USA is one of very few that still use it mainstream.

As far as your office programs go, Open Office works as well, if not better then Microsoft office, has teh same look and feel, opens Microsoft Office Files and saves to the same format AND The newest version of Microsoft office include the .OOF extension which is Open Office File, Meaning the great Microsoft God is bowing to include the code of the heathen spawn. As you would like it put. Microsoft Access, Is user friendly, but horribly limited as far as Database programs go, and Sun Micro systems, Oracle Database Is much more tolerant of slight problems that normally pop up.

Jesus said, “Go forth and spread the word of god”, Not, Go forth and capitalize.
Jesus Said, “The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” Not, You shall love the lord as long as you can make people think that what your doing is right in his name.
    And Finally,
Jesus said, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Not Love your neighbor unless he believes a different way then you, then convert him at all costs.

I will not comment on your understanding of the word of God, or your usage in this context, I will say as far as the computerized end of this goes. Do some research before you start spatting dribble infused with holy undertones that you believe will make anything you say justified.
You are proof, that ignorance is bliss.

  54. Mario Miyojim March 26th, 2007 9:31 PM

In all well thought-out stories, the person who talks most righteously and intolerant with the
“ignorance of the masses” (in his/her opinion) is the one who has the most impure thoughts and acts to hide.
For example, the minister who imprisons Quasimodo in the Hunchback of Notre Dame story is the one.
By the same token, I suspect that this author is not as honorable as he makes believe to be.

  55. Matthew Carpenter March 26th, 2007 9:50 PM

Wow. Reading your article makes me ashamed to have voted Republican in the last election and ashamed to affiliate myself with any religion chosen by someone like yourself.

Clearly, you are nothing like me.

“Vista is a marvel of modern American Christian engineering which allows me to run the world?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ¥s best software such as Microsoft Word (which I?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ¥m using to write to you now), and Microsoft Excel to do our Church accounts. AtShelleyTheRepublican .com we even use Microsoft Access to compile dossiers on suspected terrorists in our neighborhood. None of this would be possible without Windows Vista Home Premium Edition and Microsoft Office.”

Quotes like this make we want to vomit. It’s like I’m not only unamerican for running Linux, but unchristian… oh, and let’s not forget the importance of throwing in what my church runs on it’s computers. Thank you for making my outreach that much more difficult for Intelligent people to digest.

I too question the value of OLPC, but reading your article makes me desperately want to find something to like about it, so I will have less in common with you.

  56. Matthew Carpenter March 26th, 2007 9:54 PM

ok, forgive me, it was too painful to read enough to figure out the joke. It was a nightmare, this person seemed to be fulfilling exactly the stupidity my linux-compatriots accuse conservative Christians. ha ha. I still lack appreciation for the humor, but it’s clearly a farce.

  57. Pat John Botto March 27th, 2007 12:05 AM

Such a joke. I love it… It is all so bad, so stupid, so demented!

To this dunb Republican I would say: Are you a provocateur or an idiot (or do you even exist)?

My dear Christian brother, you should finally learn a number of things:

    1. Writing and spelling. Your spelling is miserable, your writing style not even reaching the level of a 3rd grader, and your general mastering of the English language poor at best.

    2. Computer Science. Read your facts about Linux, Windows and Mac OSX then come back and talk to grown up and knowledgeable people.

    3. Christianity: Learn about love, respect and tolerance. Where have you gone all those years of Sunday schooling?

    4. Politics: No need to elaborate here…. Your site is self-explanatory.

    5. History: People like you brought major empires to their doomsday: Rome, England, France, Russia to name a few.

Really a life Shuddering experienvce (your name is Shuddery, isn’t it?).

In any case, my suggestions to all my fellow un-Christians:
Take some time off, go into a monastery, a temple or simply a place where you can have quiet, tranquility and solace. Bring a Bible with you and read it.
And pray over it. Pray for light, guidance and maturity.

This is the curse of the Internet Age: Allowing children to hide behind false identities and play grown-up’s games. Or rather allowing immature adults who should go and get themselves a real education to hide behind false pretenses and spit their venom all over their keyboard.

Why! Sweet America of my dreams, where are you going?

    Pat John B.

    Truly.

    Pat

Holy shit, the article was very fun … i want more more more!!! :D

  60. dazza March 27th, 2007 8:13 AM

OLPC, is just a cheap attempt for Linux FOSS to “try” to get more or larger user base, and to get possibly some more slave labour programmers, its an attempt to try to be able to make the *false* claim that linux is gaining some kind of market share.

you have not been able to gain market share by giving away the software, so you think if you can CON governemts into paying good money (better spent on other things), for both the hardware and software you will possibly gain some more slave labour programmers, from the third world.

you make all these “claims” about hight and mighty and lofty goals about educating people etc, is all bunk, if you wanted to do that, $150 worth of text books or more teachers, or schools, or food would be a better investment.

MUCH better investment, in fact, its sad to see Linux/FOSS stoop to this level of to push their cause.

if you truly wanted to do good for the world, you would and could do much better than to try to “PUSH” second rate “laptops” on poor kids who could use 1000 things more importantly that OLPC. its a joke, but its worse is a sad joke and a nasty and backhanded attempt to push Linux/FOSS on people who dont want it and will not use it..

but hey you might get some more slave coders out of it, so its not all bad, and you can say you gave a bunch of kids a peice of crap “laptop”, instead of some text books, food, teachers, schools, or the abilithy to actually GO to schools instead of work for $10 per month..

FOSS should hang their collective heads in shame.. you call yourselves civilized !!!! its criminal..

  61. joe March 27th, 2007 8:47 AM

This is a joke site, right?

  62. Pat John Botto March 27th, 2007 9:30 AM

Yes, It HAS to be a joke. It cannot be anything else.

It is pushed so far to the 10th degree that it can only be that.

After spending more time overnight dissecting that blog, I think it is obvious.
Actually it is funny…. like the tiny VTech kids’ computer passing for the “green laptop” developed by MIT for the third world…. or the screen capture from a Commodore 64 or alike…..
Then the names of the writers and the writing itself.

    It is funny.

  63. Ahmen Reifal March 27th, 2007 9:49 AM

Has anyone noticed how the WIFI aerials on the OLPC look like devils horns?

Has anyone wondered about how it will be impossible to copy files on the OLPC without Microsoft Access?

Has anyone thought about how Visual Basic is not included? There is no reason for this, as Linux is a program, and so would have originally been written in Visual Basic.

As a career terrorist with strong religious convictions I cannot give this abomination to my remaining children.

I can express my solidarity with even American Vista using Christians, we should join together to stamp out the OLPC.

Though our countries and cultures are different (and yours is a tool of Satan) we share the same pointless hatred of things we do not understand.

DAD GOD WILL SEND YOU TO THE HELL, YOU WILL BURN IN THE HELL!!! DANMIT LIER!

  65. D Forshaw March 27th, 2007 5:20 PM

It’s not the size of the computer, or the cleverness of the software that makes a good piece of text.

It’s the brains of the person that writes it…

I suspect the third world children will make better use of their computers than this.

  66. Throw 'Em To the Lions March 28th, 2007 1:42 AM

The religious right is so whacked out that for a moment I thought this article was for real. Great satire but I do think there are some really stupid Christians who would take this seriously.

I’m hooked, Tristian. I’m going to tell all my friends about your site at our next Bible Burning party!

    Tristan,

Not that I wish to sanction any such thing but have you ever heard of Christian Ubuntu?

    http://www.whatwouldjesusdownload.com/christianubuntu/2006/07/about-ubuntu-christian-edition.html

In my view a waste of time personally. But to even suggest that anything other than windows is anti-christian you are a fool..choice is not anti-christian. Are we going to be burning linux users at the stake next?

Not to mention did you even consider getting some actual facts about the program before posting this?

    http://www.laptop.org/laptop/

Get some facts before posting something you have no idea about. It just makes you look like a fool…and makes your view regarded as such.

  70. Dave UK March 29th, 2007 9:05 PM

There is only one more thing that worries me, apart from this article, is that some one might actually believe what you write.
I feel more safe living closer to the middle east then anywhere near fanatics like you. You put shame on the Christian religion.

  71. Cannon Fodder March 31st, 2007 12:25 AM

The people here at STR are complete morons!
they wouldn’t know a decent OS if it jumped up and bit their asses.

  72. lazerzap March 31st, 2007 10:46 PM

Geez.. Where do I start.. I read your dribble and laughed.. I wondered if it was serious.. Unfortunately I think you were serious.. How sad.. How totally misinformed. I started using Microsoft Xenix Version 7 back around 1988 (guessing now.. long time ago..) Xenix was Microsofts answer to the commercial use of Unix. Unix was originally owned by AT&T Bell Labs. But due to licencing Unix was only supplied to Universities etc. Xenix was the answer to that. Microsoft also had ’supplied’ business software that was able to be purchased to operate under Xenix. Microsoft Multiplan, Multimate (Early MS Word) etc. Parts of the code (if you looked) were proprietry code from SCO even back then. So MicroSoft and SCO were in bed together that far back. Then Microsoft decided that they would ‘back out’ of business solutions based on Xenix. Prefering to push their ‘Windows’. SCO took over the product. (Tho one could be excused for thinking that SCO and Microsoft are really one in the same and always have been.)How much was it? Well Xenix wasn’t cheap. I can remember prices like $1000 for the Base Operating system. Another $1000 for the developement system. Each ‘business’ package was $300 or more.. (Excuse my bad memory on these prices.. It was a long time ago.) The hardware that we used at that time was a Tandy (Radio Shack) Model 16a/16b/6000 (Motorolla 68000 CPU with up to 1MB of memory) This (tiny by todays standards) hardware would support up to 6 users on terminals all working at the same time. Linux is/was an attempt at breaking down the cost factor so that people around the world could access the extreme power of a fully multitasking multiuser environment. (Long before Windows ever multitasked..) Each program in Linux (which are all clones of the original programs using in Unix) was reprogrammed to emulate the original Unix code. So.. You poor deluded person.. As you can see Unix/Xenix/Linux whatever you want to call it provides a much better basis for people to actally learn and understand computers and programming.
You really want to know where it started?
    http://cm.bell-labs.com/cm/cs/who/dmr/hist.html
My particular loves.. The Model 6000 can be seen here..
(With images of some of the software titles available)

    and.. this one too..

Um.. Learn from the many people who have corrected you bias view on Unix/Xenix/Linux..

  73. The Smart Linux User April 2nd, 2007 1:43 AM

Obviously, I do believe you are confused. You believe that Microsoft is the only good company out there because they charge people out their asses for the use of their products. $200 for Windows Vista? And this is morally just how (since you people always seek moral justice)?

Linux was made for the good of the people without charging them money. I also believe Jesus healed the blind and helped the crippled walk without money.

Are you saying it would be morally just for Jesus to charge the crippled man he healed for his services? According to your fascist beliefs, you do.

This blog is the best joke of this week! Or is it… =)

Dear Tristan J. Shuddery, your are most welcome to visit us in Sweden, it might be beneficial for your mental health. We could certainly learn you lots off stuff… but of course, I presume you are a close friend of mr Phelps who hates us, http://www.godhatessweden.com... or? You seem to have a lot in common baby =) And by the way, there are very few swedes wearing the kind of underwear you suggest, maybe about a few tenths of a percent of the population, at least bother to check the facts first, idiot!

I love Linux, I love democracy,
    A christian guy in Sweden!

  78. Linux_user May 16th, 2007 8:40 PM

Obviosly linux IS ready for the desktop because thats what im using right now. I’m only 15, and the only reson people think linux is hard to use is because of the misconceptions about it.
Here’s my (not finished) article about linux.
    http://boxxertrumps.bo.funpic.org/?linux
As for gaming, cegega/wine/crossover takes care of that, aswell as the ports that alot of companies put out.
as for linux being a “hacker’s” OS, you mean a cracker. This is not true, most linux users think windows users suffer enough. it is a general trend that people write viruses for the OS they are using, to test its limits and because they are most familiar with it. Also, have fun with vista, I hope it isn’;t as bad for you as it is for everything else.
(PS: A hacker is someone who uses a tone generator to get free calls from payphones. a cracker is someone who attempts to break through firewalls and junk…)

  79. The Switcher May 24th, 2007 7:15 PM

    Buaaahahaha….
Hilarious, really… especially showing those ancient computers on the front page, considering them actual…

You’re missing AGES of computer technology, “sir”…

As for your pro-Microsoft propaganda, you can the same things with openoffice, and it doesn’t cost you anything!
Your money would be used where it’s supposed to be used: charity, and doing good to people who are in need…

But wait, since you’re making lists of terrorists, you’d probably think that homeless people are “bums”… so you’re actually not doing anything to help anyone.

As for bible study, you’ll find there are open source (free, in your language) programs that do exactly this.
At least try them before you judge:

    http://www.crosswire.org/sword/software/index.jsp

So please, don’t treat humans as ignorants. The internet is a free place, and as such people are intelligent enough to tell right from wrong.

  80. Neil Diamond May 29th, 2007 2:29 PM

Holy crap this is the funniest thing I’ve ever read. This is better satire than Colbert. LOL. Made in America computer?!?! HAHAHA.

Oh wait. Are you really serious? Wow. (Don’t have time to see if this is satire or not. Either way, brilliant.) Still funny what Red Staters will believe (love the comments) and sad at the same time. BTW, Microsoft recently took a stand in favor of gays and some of Bill’s charity work helps non-Christians. You’d better find a new OS and office suite for tracking suspicious neighbors STAT!

  81. Stephan Beal June 1st, 2007 2:51 PM

“Most computer experts know that Linux is not yet ready for the desktop,”

Er… correction: most computer EXPERTS have Linux, or some other *nix variant, on their desktop. It’s the armchair hobbyists and marketers who “know” that Linux is not ready for [their] desktop.

  82. Jesus June 9th, 2007 12:28 PM

    Dear my loyal believer, Tristan,

What you say is completely wrong, Linux is not made by only Chinese or European people, it’s made by people around the whole world. So you can stop claiming that Al Querida and terrorists are the people who support Linux, Linux means freedom so any one can use it for free. And you are completely wrong in saying that Linux is less secure than windows because more than 60% of the servers around the globe are using Linux as there operating system. If you are unsure in this matter please see badvista.org, then you will understand about this matter.

Both Pentagon and NSA is relying on Linux to protect their servers, maybe you can go and warn them :P

    wow–
My first impression in the first paragraph of your blog was, “Holy shit, this person is EXTREMELY biased.”

first of all, children is third world countries aren’t looking to play “good Christian games”– this project isn’t meant to shove religion down anyones throat; it’s meant to allow children in developing countries to be able to become more knowledgeable. This project isn’t meant to allow these children to play games 24/7, they don’t want that. Not every child plays video games. Not every person wants a bible program on their computer- I certainly don’t.
