Lies and Liberal Lies: Absurd Liberal Troll of the Month

Dear Friends,

The Bible tells us that when we do the LORDs work satan’s minions will try to challenge us. Every day Shelley recieves hundreds of troll emails just like the one we have the pleasure of publishing today. Please remember, even if this poster claims to be a christian, it is a well-known fact that atheists often prentend to be Christians in order to discredit our beliefs.

Yours in Christ, Tristan.

Dear “Shelley”,

Allow me to point out a few corrections to your webpage hosted at http://www.shelleytherepublican.com/category/education/technical/linux

“Fact File: The most skilled hackers call themselves “Script Kiddies” because they use Linux PHP scripts to do all their hacking. PHP is an obsolete programming language that was based on an ammateur implementation of Microsoft’s ASP. The iamge shows a typical hacker, he is probably trying to steal government secrets or pass confidential information on to fellow terrorists.”

This is incorrect. It is the least skilled hacker that is referred to as a Script Kiddie. Script Kiddies borrow scripts (not necessarily PHP – they can be Perl, C++, bash, etc) made by other hackers and use them > > in some sort of perverse attempt to justify their existance. They believe themselves to be better than others because they can DDOS or hack into a system using other peoples work.

“Possessing hacking tools should be a criminal offense*: This should include any software designed to circumvent other computer’s security, plus products with known relations to hacking tools. For example the Linux operating system includes DVDRIP (for pirating DVDs), SSH (for breaking into remote computers), and Telnet (an older remote hacking tool). All of these evil programs should be outlawed.”

Corrections:

- Use of DVDRIP falls under the little acknowledged “fair use” reasoning – I back up my DVDs to my PC and store the DVDs on a shelf where they are rarely used. As I am only ever using one copy at the time I am not pirating the DVDs.

- SSH is a remote administration tool, made by the same people who make OpenBSD (which I remember you praising in one of your articles….). It is used for checking on, updating, fixing, upgrading, and setting up remote servers. Some hackers attempt to gain access to a server via SSH. SSH itself is not a hacking tool. Telnet is likewise – although a much older and very insecure plaintext shell.

“Computer programs that do not include DRM and “Trusted Computing” security should be prohibited from sale in the USA. These incomplete computers present an easy target for hackers and must be phased out to make way for modern American technology. Linux computers are often provided without any anti-virus software, and often become riddled with viruses. Removing these dangerous computers would make life better for the rest of us.”

DRM will cause damage to the economy by reducing competition and driving small businesses out of business. DRM is too wide a subject to cover here – suffice it to say that it will reduce consumer freedom of choice and pave the way for a few large companies to produce expensive poor quality material.

“Firstly, let me say thank you for bringing the perils of that communist menace “Linux” to our attention. Unlike that communist manifesto, the so called “GNU Public License”

Linux is not communism. The code of Linux is free to share, but it may also be sold. Companies such as RedHat are examples of large American businesses built on selling and servicing Linux computers.

“What is a Kernel? This component is used for typing in simple commands like “dir” and “more”. Windows has a component called “cmd.exe” which serves a similar purpose but comes with better commands. Windows programmers often use a modern graphical user interface in preference to a kernel, however Linux users do not have this luxuary.”

Wrong.

A kernel is the most basic component of the operating systems. In a linux system this is referred to usually as vmlinuz or similar. Windows also uses a kernel. The prompt where a user enters commands is reffered to as the Command Shell. Windows uses the cmd.exe Command Shell.

Linux may use a variety of shells such as tcsh, ksh and bash. The latter three are far superior to cmd.exe in usability and intuitivity.

Windows’ Graphical User Interface runs on top of the kernel and provides a graphical interface. Graphical interfaces are also available for Linux.

These usually consist of a piece of software called the X Windows System (also referred to as Xorg or XFree86) on top of which a graphical interface such as GNOME or KDE runs. These graphical interfaces are as advanced or superior to Windows own interface. OpenBSD is also available with KDE or GNOME. On a Linux system the interface and kernel are seperated so that if the interface crashes the system is still stable. Windows does not enjoy this luxury.

“Fact File: What is source code? Old computer programs were distributed as source-code on magnetic tape. This is an obsolete way to distribute software that was used before the availablity of the more convenient “Binary” format. Even today, some programs (such as those written by GNU) are released as source code only. Perversely, this is to prevent the software from being used outside the fraternity of
computer hackers.”

Source code is the format in which code is originally written. This is then converted into BINARY CODE using a compiler. The binary code is usually distributed for commercial software that will be run on many similar systems (eg Microsoft Word) wheras source code allows a user to modify the code to suit their system.

A Linux user can convert a source code package into an installed binary program using four simple commands.

“If one of your friends is using Linux or may be tempted to try it show them this article. Explain that Linux is a genuine threat and that by using it they may be opening their computer to Chinese hackers.”

Anyone who knows anything about Linux will just laugh at you if you say that to them.

“Finally, remember to include Linux users in your prayers tonight. As individuals we may not be able to change people’s minds, but the Bible teaches that God can make any sinner repent.”

I missed the part where I was a sinner because I used Linux? I happen to be a Christian and you have no right to judge my faith based upon an operating system preference.

I hope you take the time to read and think about my points presented here. You are spreading lies, rumour and incorrect facts along with opinion posted as fact.

Praying for you,

David Nelson

“Please remember, even if this poster claims to be a christian, it is a well-known fact that atheists often prentend to be Christians in order to discredit our beliefs.”

The problem, Tristan, is that you wrote a factual article based on your beliefs, and the facts you presented in your original article were incorrect. Just because someone disagrees with the incorrectly-presented facts does not mean they are an Atheist.

On the other hand, it’s funny to watch technology (very factual and scientific) and religion (based on beliefs) be mixed together in such an extremist fashion.

  2. Fribs January 9th, 2007 7:33 AM

may he should write the next article about linux, and NOT tristan!
But its unfair that you put some Nerd pictures in his article, only because he is more intelligent than you are!

    mfg Fribs

p.s. im looking forward to some more self-critical articles

  3. Hark3n January 9th, 2007 9:49 AM

Good response to Tristan’s blatant trash.

Bieng a Linux/BSD user myself, I can say that all his facts are correct.

    Slightly agnostic Christian athiest(go figure?)

  4. Vash January 9th, 2007 2:36 PM

Dave is right about linux. Tristan is wrong. Again! But do not be sad. It happends even in better families.

  5. Vash January 9th, 2007 3:00 PM

If Tristan always fail in simple article about facts available on internet, how could we trust him in matter of faith?

If he says that “God wants this or that”. It is highly probable that it is another mistake.

This argumentation should warn people from wittingly spreading false facts. You would become liar, or stupid.

  6. Red Flag, Brick Wall January 9th, 2007 7:50 PM

Even republicans would agree with this article, with the exception of the title and the Grey stuff on top.

  7. the truth January 9th, 2007 8:30 PM

I don’t get it. This article wasn’t funny. Please, go back to the comedy, i look forward to it.

  8. Arktanis January 9th, 2007 11:04 PM

Finally an article which speacks truth! The thing is, it’s not any of you, which actually means you close your mind to the truth of the world, or you are just plain stupid to learn. “Old dogs can’t learn new tricks”, you must be really old dogs since you keep on cloging your eyers trying to avoid the truth in front of you.

Well, I’d like to thank this dear Linux user for speaking the truth since here its common to see zealotus covering of the truth coverd by their belief. I’m pretty sure god said to love each other, not to love yourself and hate what you fear. Now, close your eyes, open your minds, embrace the truth, not your truth, THE TRUTH, comunism isn’t bad, it just failed just like capitalism could have, GNU/Linux has nothing to do with comunism nor does free software or open source, Linux is at least 1 step ahead of windows because of its community and open source.

I would like to say, also, this fellow Linux user forgot to mention, there are no anti-virus software for one simple reason, THERE ARE NO VIRUSES FOR LINUX… It’s funny how ignorance and fear to know can lead to more stupidity, seriously, it’s kind of silly giving false information… I seem to recall this situation from my history class… Yeah, middle ages, dark age of knowdlege, it’s easier to control people who don’t know, the thing is, that is what gets tecnological evolution stuck.

Maybe I haven’t made any sense since I’m not really good with words(or thats what I think), but just think of all you know, are you sure it’s the truth? Forget about religion, that’s personal and doesn’t change the truth. Linux is not evil, Windows has MANY flaws, there is no war, there is slaughter, Bush is wrong and I feel really sorry for all those fighting young man who killed/are killing people so as america can get oil to pollute more this poor planet we live in, this poor planet which will get beyond cure soon.

P.S: I’m using Linux as i write this reply and I use it just because I like programming here, If you like Windows it’s your choice, but please stop telling lies. By the way, I know lots of Linux users, and no one looks like those dudes on the pictures(included me).

With a better conception of the people in the world, for you

  12. Proud German January 11th, 2007 1:47 PM

    1. This article does not deliver.
    2. Finally someone who has really any idea about IT (unlike Tristan).
    3. Your ranting about that guy is cheap and fails even more to deliver.

    rofl pwned, funny really.

  16. the digitalmouse January 14th, 2007 7:43 AM

a really funny part is the false claim that Linux has no anti-virus software. taken literally, Windows has no anti-virus software either when freshly installed: you must download or purchase software for that task, for any operating system. thankfully there are nearly as many such progams for Linux as there are for Windows. Google is your friend, and certainly far more trustable than this rag.

  17. Atheist God January 14th, 2007 9:36 PM

    Agreed.

  21. the digitalmouse January 16th, 2007 8:41 AM

    Linux User babbled:
    >Can your shitty M$Windoze desktop do this, you republican scum?

speaking as someone who use all the popular OS platforms on a regular basis, i can say ‘yes it can’. Although Linux or MacOS X may do it in a bit more intuitive way, or use the computers resources better to accomplish it, Windows (for all it’s faults) can certainly do the things in your screenshot when properly set up to do so.

Crawl back under your rock, Linux User (speaking only to the dingbat who posted above, not Linux Users in general – most of them are decent souls, including myself).

Linux fanboys do nothing more than make the rest of us look better, Republican *or* Democrat.

  22. Jack January 16th, 2007 11:58 AM

lol, leave him be, as you said he’s doing us a favor making us look better!
I still can’t make the Windows taskbar translucent though…

I thought you would like this, STR:

  23. Cannon Fodder January 16th, 2007 12:45 PM

Well, to the statement about viruses. It is my understanding that, like MacOS X, Linux really doesn’t have a huge need for virus protection like windows. In the fact that there aren’t NEARLY as many viruses written for Linux as Windblows. Am I really wrong here? I have had a lot of Linux users tell me that.

  24. Cannon Fodder January 16th, 2007 12:52 PM

Let me correct myself some here. I do know that everyone needs anti-virus software. That wasn’t the point I was making.

  25. Snake January 16th, 2007 9:55 PM

what the hell?? this is not a funny article… only true stuff… and the gray words at the begining are NOT funny nor the pictures are… what the hell happened to you?? make more funny articles about linux plz!

Linux is a good thing blessed by me! All the humanity shall use it!

Windows will never be able to be secure as Linux is today.
I can customize my linux to run better and faster in my PC. To do that with Windows I would have to buy new hardware pieces.
Look at the screenshots to see my 5 different graphical interfaces installed in my Ubuntu Linux:

I’m surprised to read this article. I personnaly use linux AND windows system. I’m a student in computer sciences and I can assure you that all is correct.

I want to to add something about PHP : this website uses PHP.
Another ? Linux don’t uses a antivirus because there is no viruses on linux systems. Why ? A virus written for linux can’t do nothing wrong if you’re not logged as an administrator on the system, it’s a specificity of the UNIX family architecture.

  30. shaitan February 10th, 2007 9:35 PM

    Tristan,

maybe your friends at NASA know GNU/Linux better than you do, isn’t it?

If Microsoft is so great, why don’t you change web servers?
