You keep forgetting that this is an AMERICAN website run by and for AMERICANS.? And AMERICANS speak, write, talk and think in AMERICAN.? I, too, have several points to make:
1) So far, the STR site and it’s “American” bloggers have displayed nil common decency. Especially when writing about European countries they never bothered to visit and to get to know. All they show is hauteur and arrogance.
2) You’re speaking English. End of story. The normative syntax/accent is rarely spoken by wide population. In UK, I believe only 5% use RP. In my country, Slovakia, we too have multiple “dialects” that use different words for specific things and pronounce certain syllables differently. But this is, too, the lack of common decency on behalf of “Americans”, the fundamental lack of will to approach a common point (in speech, ideas or whatever). Again, arrogantly you bash and ridicule anything you don’t understand or comprehend from your little rigid vantage point.
3) Basically, you lack education and nobleity of spirit; something that no ammount of “religiousity” (quite fake, arrogant and aggressive) is going to hide. For this, you deserve contempt.

American English is a Dialect.
If you were speaking with, say, a Spanish person, you would not understand ANYTHING they said, you would have minor misunderstandings like the use of the word “mate”. The problems you would have in understanding a British person, are the same problems a Newyorker may have in understanding someone with a strong Alabama accent.
What you said about “going to private schools that get american advice” is one of the most uninformed comments ive ever heard. Even latin american third countries (most of them) have functional public schools systems, and they host around 80% of the total population in school age. Even that 20% goes to public schools that dont have any relation whatsoever with american institutions, and let me tell you why: American Education Sucks, and this website is living proof of that.
Im a “3rd world” country resident, went to public schools all my life, i am fluent in 25 languajes (Spanish, English, American, Argentinean, Uruguayan, Venezuelan, Mexican, Puertorican, Cuban, Chilean, Peruvian, etc) :p), i have read more than youll read in all your life, and im 22.

as a matter of facts, canadians do speak french. Of course there are some vocabulary differences, but it’s french nonetheless.
Swiss speaks french too, belgian people too, and some countries in africa also. Even if it’s derivated in local dialect, no one consider it really different from french (with the exception of the cr??Ǭ©ole dialect, which drift reaaaaally far from french)
Likewise, american is a dialect derivated from english, like scottish or australian. Not a language on it’s own.
And while I’m at it, english/american is FAR from being the most spoken language in the world, it’s only the fourth (beaten by chinese, spanish, an hindou)
Well, you can’t base the difference between languages in the misunderstanding of two words. You speak American English, which is a dialect of standard English (as British English is).
I’m Spanish, so my mother language is Spanish. It allows me to talk to hundreds of millions of people in the whole world. That’s an invaluable cultural richness. The same that you have with English. Of course there are some lexical difference between an Argentinian and a Spanish, but if both parts of the communication make an easy effort using standard words it’s not a problem.
As you say, if you speak English, you can communicate to people from different countries. Haven’t you thought that’s so good?
If in USA you speak American, what do Canadians speak? You can’t say that they speak Canadian, since they speak two languages. So you must say that they speak English and French.
I respect your thought that English is the language of the US, and I think it’s logical that you try to ‘preserve’ it from the ‘threat’ of Spanish in the south of the country. For example, here in Spain we have big problems with regional languages (in a country with the same size as Texas there are regions with historial own languages: Catalonia, Basque Country and Galicia), and some people complain about that sometimes in Barcelona is difficult to get someone in the Administration who wants to speak to you in Spanish (not in Catalonian), and that’s crazy, since Spanish is the official language in the whole country regarding to our Constitution. In a country, having a common language joins the people. But it can’t be an obstacle to let people speak in other languages at home, and it’s good that school system offers its teaching as a second language for those pupils who want to learn it.
You should be more open-minded. US is a great country, but you would be surprised of all the rest of the world can offer to you if you want to look at (and speak to) it.

It seems an act of incredible hubris to call our dialect of english “American”. America is not technically a country, it’s a continent, and the vast majority of countries in America speak Spanish. Wouldn’t it make more sense to call Spanish “American” than English? No, because it would be arrogant and rude. And so is calling our special dialect of English “American”.
