Culture Wars: The Goths
Friends,
We conservatives are a tolerant bunch; sometimes too tolerant. Is it really right to ignore evil lifestyles? There are some Americans whose motto is “Live and Let Live”, that is to turn a blind eye to the bad things they see around them.
Shelley, myself and our fellow writers do not feel that way. We believe that God commands us, through the Holy Bible to stand up for what is good and when we see the signs of corruption in our communities and country we feel obliged to call them out that after all is exactly what Jesus Christ would do. It’s because of Christ’s example that we feel compelled to write this blog.
And thats why I would like to talk to you about the latest way liberals are re-packaging the creed of satanism. I’m talking about “goths”:
At this point, I know some of my readers will be confused. I’m not talking about the ancient race of pagan people who were known as the Goths, nor am I talking about the medieval style of church-building which is also known as the ‘Gothic’ style. I’m referring to a modern American sub-culture whose goal is to turn our American teens into black-clad zombies! Unlike the ancient pagans and the medieval Churches, the Goths are amongst us and intent on challenging American values now.
We all know that kids are not born “Gothic”; Just like homosexuality, Gothic behavior must be acquired, or more specifically taught . Many kids become gothic because of the influence of older goths, however an entire genre of movies, music and television exist to make children Gothic:
Can you believe that a kid’s film has a satanic character as it’s hero? This movie is goth-training. It has been designed to corrupt children and turn them gothic.
For example, many Goths credit their “turning” to the movie “The Nightmare before Christmas”, by the famous nihilist director Tim Burton. In this movie the devil (who resembles an animated skeleton) creates a distorted, evil version of Christmas in which his satanic cohorts make a mockery of God’s day. The popularity of this film proves the liberal’s agenda in thw war against Christmas.
As you would expect, it’s the bad-guys who get all the best lines, and the overwhelming message of the film is that it’s good to disrespect our Christian traditions. This film creates a bad example that small children wish to imitate.
This Christian child might end up gothic if she is allowed access to dangerous material such as “The Nightmare before Xmas”.
For the teenage Goth, life can be confusing. Lacking God’s guidance most teenage Goths belive themselves to be vampires or “Vampyres”, as they commonly mis-spell. Once again, propelled by a liberal movie industry that promotes satanic films like “Interview with a Vampire”, many young Americans are propelled into disgusting blood-drinking habits.
Teenage goths: At least one of these kids has already turned to vampirism. These kids face a bleak future unles they repent and turn back to Christ.

Finally, as an adult Goth one’s mission is to spread corruption as far as possible. The adult goth retains the juvenile’s morbid obsessions but freed from any form of parental guidance (or what passes for guidance in liberal households) they are free to adopt ever more outlandish forms of dress and deportment.
For the adult Goth, life is unpleasant. The goth is forever an outcast he can no more fit in with a modern business environment than he can in polite society. Would you like a Goth living next door to you?
Wherever he goes, he attracts stares and scorn, so he is forced to abandon the normal world, and devote his drug-addled attention to the sleazy side of life. Many Goths become nocturnal, and as a result, most Goths work in comic-book stores, and peripheral aspects of the sex-trade.
Adult goths: They seek to corrupt a new generation of Americans to their satanic way.
It is at this point that the adult Goth seeks to acquire a younger generation of proto-goths to pass on their ‘virus’. Lacking in friends and shunned by society, this is the only form of friendship that most Goths achieve.
But all is not bleak. Christ’s love can turn these living zombies. Shelley and I have seen this with our own eyes, as by bearing witness to Christ’s message the goth learns that his master (Satan) is a defeated enemy, and in doing so casts off his chains (both literal and figurative).
As of today, the STR.com Internet ministry will be seeking out the Internet’s most outlandish Goths and will make them an offer they cannot refuse: Eternal life with Jesus Christ. If you know of a goth or live near a gothic community please take a few hours to proclaim Christ’s love to them. They may be unready for a confrontation, and this would be a perfect opportunity to change their lives.
This Finnish band called “In Flames” is guilty of spreading the gothic message to impressionable teens. Concerned parents should prevent kids from listening to goth music, also known as “Black Metal”. The most popular black metal bands include: Slipknot, Marralyn Manson, U2, Kiss, The Darkness, Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy, Meatloaf and Negativland. If you know of other goth bands, please let me know so I can add them to this list.

This is a truly hateful sight Mr “The Spur”. I only left your post up as an example of just how hateful and mis-informed liberals can be.
I’ve heard this sick disease has even been spread as far as Britian, England. They can’t even come up with their own perversions. The only thing I’m going to point out with this one is that there is no such thing as an illegal BBS. Illegal things can be posted, but just about the only things that are ever prosecuted over the ‘net are fraud and child pornography.

My daughter watched Finding Nemo and turned into a fish. If I hadn’t heard her flapping she’d have suffocated. I think it’s the liberal paedophiles at Pixar and Walt Disney who are responsible for this. I on the other hand watched Rio Lobo the other day, and when I woke up the next morning I’d turned into John Wayne, a true American Hero. Unfortunately I also have lung cancer now.
Well if a BBS detailing how to make “bloody wine” is not illegal, it soon will be with the help of President George W Bush and the Supreme Court. Sadly there’s still some liberal activists on the Court though.

Richard 23, thanks for your excellent suggestions and comments. I find the practices of these “Vampyres” nausiating – what they do is a health risk, and blood if abused can be a WMD. Why should we allow these abhorent practices to continue?
R23 (The Bullshit ‘Bot!): This has hit many shorelines…though I pray the disease didn’t start here; that would be an embarrassment to America. Also, I highly doubt that girl on the trike is that Goth in the corner…though the very possibility is horrendous. Next, subliminal messages require some sort of sound. Images aren’t enough. Not to mention a look at the basic HTML coding of the site is enough to disprove your spurious claims. Finally, note they don’t talk about killing people to get blood. So, they aren’t plotting murder, so they aren’t commiting a crime. That being said, such actions will never be a crime, given they don’t infringe upon the personal liberties of anyone else. Tristan: I would like to see you explain exactly how blood can be a WMD. Yes, it’s a health risk, but they’re risking their own hides, not mine. Read our Constitution, and take a look at such things as murder cases. Say I was charged with murder. First off, it’s “habeus corpus”. And you have the purpose completely wrong…it allows a person charged and held for a crime to contest the legality of their being held. You’re also ignoring the benefits he brough, such as horses. Finally, there is no “redplague”…the closest I can think of is the “Black Death”, the bubonic plague that struck Europe several time in the medieval ages. Though, since I actually know my history, you’re probably speaking of smallpox, which, over a century later, was used as an early biological weapon by the British. You also don’t seem to realize that Columbus was financed by Spain, not by the British.

From what I understand of the origins of Goth, for once, Tristan isn’t far off. And if the core’s rotten, you throw the whole bad apple away. As for the “circus”, I don’t recall seeing a whole lot of badly dressed freaks at Beetles and Rolling Stones concerts they have videos of from way back when.

Interestingly enough you may wish to do some further research into the Gothic subculture. Most of the pictures you’ve chosen to place on here represent Black Metal culture, which is about a million miles from goth. There’s a big difference between appreciating beauty, poetry, being well read and open minded (goth) than to having aggressive anti-god music and promoting burning down churches (Black Metal).

Honestly, I’ve never read something so poorly written, or laden with inacuracies and outright falsehoods. You label goth and black metal as synonyms for one another. That’s a falsehood. The bands you call black metal aren’t even black metal bands. Heck, only two of them are even goth bands. Your pictures, especially of the “adult goths” aren’t even goths…
Where did you do your research? If you are going to take the time to write something and post it for the world to see, don’t you have any interest in it being correct?

This article deals only with the aesthetic viewpoint of goth. But, the author of it, much like a great many people in the Church today… is understandably ignorant to what goth is all about.
First of all, goth is not about a fashion statement, or music. It didn’t start as a way to seduce kids and teens to become “zombies”.
In fact, the term “Goth” is not even a word that describes a culture, or sub-culture necessarily. It is simply a “Description” of a personal outlook that existed long before the term was even thought up.
What the word “Goth” does is to give definition to the long established viewpoint that the world is dark, and that each of us bears our own personal darkness. The fashion statements of modern gothicism, the musical tastes, etc. are not the main issue. The main issue is that goth is about honesty.
Writers like Poe, Shelley, etc. had gothic personalities, because they gave a face to the inner states of human deprivation. Even Christian writers, like George MacDonald, and C.S. Lewis wrote stories in which human depravity is revealed in all it’s subtlety, and subsequent ensuing damage.
Edmund’s betrayal of his siblings in the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is a famous, yet instinctively gothic revelation of the inhumanity that can result from one seemingly innocent choice.
George MacDonald’s fantasy tale “Phantastes” is extremely gothic in nature. In which a man’s perception of reality is challanged to the breaking point. Following false beauty nearly to his own demise, being confronted with his own terrifying shadow. A shadow that harms everything it touches, etc.
What is perceived as “Goth” today has very little depth. Musical taste and fashion statements do virtually nothing to show what is the heart of goth. The heart of goth is found in the acceptance that I am not whole. And that God can take what has been damaged within me and make something beautiful and (True) out of it.
What will happen to black widows when the world is made perfect again? A day will come when nothing will hurt or destroy in all His’ holy world. Will black widows cease to exist? Lions will eat straw like an ox, and wolves will lay with lambs. Children will play in the dens of vipers without harm. So what about the black widow?
Just because the black widow inspires horror now doesn’t mean that it will then. We are told in Scripture that once predatory animals will live in peace with the prey they once hunted. What frightens us now will be beautiful then. Peaceful.
And, as dark and frightening as a black widow spider is to us now, it’s form will not change then. But, our (Perception) of it will. It will no longer be a creature condemned as evil for it’s dark, bizarre appearance.
I believe the same is true with goths. Just because we may occasionally look weird, and listen to music that would frighten the more conservative person doesn’t mean we lack depth and substance. It doesn’t mean we are satanists under a new name. It simply means that we are black widows who will one day be beautified in God’s Kingdom.

I just fell upon this poor piece of writing while doing some research on Norway. Don’t know how I got here but here I am. I had to comment. Not only is this poor writing with nothing but extremist oppinion, but there are absolutely no facts to back up any of your logic. I can see that you must be a good person and that is something that is important to you. I condone that. However, your views on this subject are very limited and seemingly uneducated. You should have your right to your religion without anyone judging that. Adversely, “goths” should too (although most are gothic simply for fashion and nothing more, where there is no religion involved). How would you like to hear someone pick your religion apart when they know nothing about it? There’s bad in every dose and in every corner of life, your religion is not excluded. But how would you like to hear someone babble on and on about your religion in a negative connotation, when you know just by listening to them that they have no grounds… no bearings… no nada to back it up? Happens all the time doesn’t it? Does it not make that individual look entirely uneducated on the subject, when they have done nothing to research it? Especially when they give folly examples that are way off. Many of your examples are simply not facts, just speculation off of something you picked up somewhere in life, from someone. Give oppinions on something you know about. Don’t take a stab in the dark when honestly sweetie, your attitude is more pessimistic and “gothic” than most goths I know. At least have your facts thoroughly researched and your examples of music… listen to them first before you just throw down some names that one of your churchgoing friends may have let slip from his lips. Question everything you were raised with before you judge everything you weren’t. Otherwise it just looks like you’re in fear of learning anything new. You’re obviously too afraid to commit to learning facts about what you know nothing about. So why would we, your readers, as a collective whole assume that what you have learned is correct? If you are standing for something, stand for it. Be well-rounded on the subject. Know why you agree with it, and what there is to disagree with. Because you never know when you’re going to end up in a debate and it seems like you’d be the personality type who would thrive on that. But in order to debate and prove something true, you must know both sides of the coin. In your example of goths, you know neither side of the coin and it is obvious. I feel like you’re really young and naive from your words as well. Couldn’t be over 20. And if you are, then it really is time to get out and see the world. It’s safe to say, as your reader, you know nothing of the grandeur experience of things. I do hope you get a chance to see the world so that you can come to realise how the gothic world is completely linked to the religious world that you stand for. They can not be separated just because you don’t like the way that young teens use black and fake blood for fashion and attention. If you had seen more of the world and had a few disheartening experiences, no doubt you would be able to perceive fashion and shock value for what it is. It is what it is. Nothing more. Try not to link everything that which is separate, together. There’s no point. Just because you think it or feel it, doens’t make it true… ask any psychologist. Your ideas of cause and effect are generalizing at best. Sometimes it’s appropriate to generalize, in business, etc. That’s when it would do something for you. But in this case, generalizing will do nothing for you except keep you sheltered from a very interesting world. Fear is no excuse. When you take off the veil of judgement, what excitement will you have left to see? And really ask yourself what is the worst that could happen to educate myself on how other people live, vs. what other people view as art or fashion? Be careful how tightly you do generalize. Like I said, it won’t do anything for you. Remember everyone finds beauty in different things. Really analyze your oppinions and ask yourself where they are coming from. Do they come from a place of fact? Or do they come from a place of fear? There is nothing wrong with fearing this world and the differences within it. But one picture, director, or character in a movie will not actually be the root of evil itself. Moreover, the uncomfort you find at looking at these things, likewise does not mean that evil is inherent. That is in your mind. You are perceiving this to be true. Other people read things quite differently from you. Remember that too when forcing such judgements as facts when you have no basis or education behind your comments. It’s like mom always said, “if you don’t have anything to say, just keep your mouth shut.” And you don’t have anything to say that hasn’t been said before. Your fearing frame of mind is not new, which is why it is so easy to label. You fear that which is unknown. Before getting defensive, think about it. What do you really know out of everything you wrote. Take a minute to think about it without being right or wrong. And like I said, just because you feel it, doesn’t make it true. I would suggest doing some real reading and research on BOTH sides of the coin. Don’t just stop at the first thing you read because it might substantiate your negative view. Keep reading until you can prove yourself wrong. That is the mind of a philosopher. If you truly have no argument at the end of extensively studying, then maybe you have an argument. But like I said before, both sides of the coin. Reason being, someone else will always be able to argue with you and they will leave you speechless if you are not prepared to address each angle. Start with going to dictionary.com and type in pentagram. Remember, philosopher’s mind… no judging allowed. That means, when you read the word occult that it displays, know what occult means before you judge it. Don’t let everything implied in your life, and by the people in it, have an effect on what is fact based in reality. Facts remain facts no matter the conversations you have with people over coffee or in a church. Research the word occult. No judgement. As an excercise to see if you can think like a researcher or philosopher, ask yourself why the definition is NOT negative. See if you can come up with the reality of the definition. Seemed to me that it is a word that defines that which we do not understand beyond the physical. Now where in there does it say evil? Just because the majority of people have a misled definition doesn’t make the majority right either. The world is not flat after all. Beyond that, yes I could agree that for the sake of communicating with others, it would be easier to take a negative approach with a word such as occult. Easier because otherwise you would have to explain away the judgement. As an example… if I said there is actually no racism would you not laugh and say where are you coming from? But if I explained that there is literally no such thing as separate races due to the fact that we are all the “human race” and there can be no separation because there is only one human race, then that would begin to make sense no? But for the sake of communicating we keep it how the majority feels comfortable with it. That’s why I say research because the whole world is full of the majority hearsay knowledge which actually has no basis for truth. Find your own truth, don’t rely on the world. Because from one country to the next, people view things completely differently. See the opening scene from the movie “The Davinci Code” for further examples. And then there’s the question of what you may or may not be allowed to view or participate in due to religious beliefs. I don’t think it’s the question of what you’re allowed to do, I think it’s the question of why not. It all goes back to someone not wanting to be questioned. Because if they are questioned, they’re whole foundation and basis for being a functioning and established church or organized religion is in threat of crumbling. Of course they would want to bar you from such research and plant seeds in your heads about where the evil lives. Everything that is not your way, is the evil. That just doesn’t make any sense. Don’t let them take away your right to learn. I highly doubt God would put a thunder bolt up your ass after giving you free will. He does not punish those He gives to. Remember that. He is not to fear, oppression is to fear. Research pythagoreanism (which is also in the definition of pentagram). Keep researching. The trick is to research even the words you think you do know. Pretty soon you might be able to leave your preacher speechless. Unless, that’s what you’re afraid of. And then you have to ask yourself why am I afraid of them? Why would I be uncomfortable with questioning what I know? Is it simply that you don’t what to be wrong? Is the glory of being right that significant? I would never tell someone to throw away their religion. On the contrary, I would stand behind any and all religions, as long as yours LENDS TO POSITIVITY WITHIN YOUR LIFE. But honestly, how positive is it when nothing but negativity seethes from you when you’re trying to make an uneducated point? How positive have you let your own religion become when it has hindered your own growth on learning for yourself? Churches for centuries have been afraid of their disciples questioning their power, heirarchy, wealth, etc. So you can remain silent. No one said you have to ask the guy whom you know will spat in your face. But it is your responsibility to know what you are talking about when you bleed into the public with your hate. How would that make you any better than who you scorn? And by the way, a little PS. The homosexual preference you were talking about bothered me a bit. Quite literally after reading extensively about the psychology on that issue, it has NOT been proven whether it is learned or whether it is inherent at conception. I had a theory that blew ‘em both away. This’ll getcha. Did you know that it is a scientifically proven fact that we all start as female in the womb? Soak that in for a moment. But don’t take my word for it, research it. Okay so if that’s true, then there must be a shifting that occurs in the development of the mind just as the shift occurs in the “dropping” of the female to male parts. In other word, if one becomes the other… then there is a “shift” or “change” that occurs… obviously. What if the shift falls short? What if the shift doesn’t get to complete and what started as female, mentally became male but the genitals did not have a chance to progress? You’d have a homeosexual female then would you not? And then take it one step further in saying that what started as female, made it to male physically, but fell short in the development of the mind. That would leave us with a homosexual male. In both cases neither could be helped. Do you feel normal as a heterosexual? Do you feel that it was learned? Then how could you people decide for someone else that they’re not normal as if to say they chose to be homosexual?! Why would someone choose such a harsh and difficult life? Why would someone want to have to admit to their family something that in many cases leaves them scorned and alone? Is that right? If you had a child that was homosexual, you would actually waste your time and energy on trying to change them and make them feel wrong like everyone did to you for so many different things as you grew up? They don’t make you feel wrong you say? Yes that’s right, that’s why you feel comfortable with researching facts without oppinion I forgot. 2. Drinking Blood : Is not as weird as you would think. There is a number of tribes in Africa that live on cow’s blood. Blood is almost a perfect food, actually.(google it!) It has basically every nutrient your body needs and is amazingly good for you. It can be dangerous though, as blood also carries a lot of diseases.
3. “Goths” = Satanists: complete bullsh*t. Yet again, think before you speak. Do not make generalizations about a group of people unless you have somekind of substantial evidence to back it up. Yes, there are goths who are satanists, just like there are goths who are christian, buddhist, athiest, ect.
4. U2 is not a death metal band. They are not even a “metal” band. Please, don’t insult the genre.
5. Goths want to change “American Values”: No, not really. Most goths don’t give a d*mn about how other people live their lives. It’s the “religious right” that tries to force people into being something they’re not.
6. “Goths” are outcasts: not unless they choose to be. A goth who only leaves the house at night, does drugs and tries to creep people out is doing it because that is how they choose to live their particular existence. Not all “goths” decide to live that way.
7. Don’t assume a goth can’t live “normally” and get a good job ect. I’m labeled as “gothic”, yet I stll live normally. I have a nice job as a hostess in a fancy restaurant, i do good in school and i have a lot of friends, both “gothic” and non-gothic. I was wondering if I can get some advice. I am a reguler church goer, and have recently met some new friends, last week whilst baking cakes at one of their houses I heard some very depressing music which I later found out to be from the U2, it seemed to be espousing the drinking of blood on gods day. It was called sunday bloody sunday.
Now I really like this friend, But cannot condone her listening to music with this kind of message. I have tried to get her to come with me to church but she just smiles and says that she chooses her own way in life and doesnt need a church to tell her what is moral or correct as she already has enough sense of these things already.
I am truly afraid for her soul, What can I do. I approached my church leaders and they have suggested that I not spend time with the girl anymore, That she is evil and should be shunned and judged not in gods sight. But I dont want to give up on her, That’s not the way of Christ.

His classic song,”I Put a Spell On You”still sounds pretty wild fifty years after he recorded it,with the eerie rhythm and the maniacal screaming! The song altered his career,forcing him to live up to an image in which he leaped out of a casket onstage at concerts,dressed like a voodoo priest or a vampire! What i wonder, is why the “gothic movement” is blamed for so many things, when all it is is just something different. It reminds me quite a bit of racism. Sure some movies can be bad, but why didn’t you include some other horror movies? The Nightmare before Xmas has a story behind it. A love story, good defeating evil, overcoming obsitcles and so forth. But what about “13 Ghosts” or perhaps “The Ring”. You never mentioned them. 1. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a movie about the ‘Pumkin King’, a fictional character made to symbolize the king of Halloween (NOT Hallow’s Eve, we’re talking about the commercialistic Halloween that involves candy and costumes and such). He stumbled upon Christmas town and is entranced by the BEAUTY of the world and the concept of Christmas. He decides he wants to help with the Holiday, but realizes he causes more harm than good in the end. How is this Satanic in any way? Honestly. You’ve lost me on that one. Halloween is based on ’spooky’ things…if it were some fluffy bunny it would not have the same affect. So, once, you are judging something by it’s apearance.
2. 4. So, if a child watches a child’s movie…and later chooses to wear clothes that are different than what most people can tolerate (obviously), it’s because of that movie, and consquentally, it’s a BAD thing? Would you rather the child become a nudist?
5. Most kids who take on the ‘gothic’ fashion do NOT believe to be vampires and the like. I’ve no idea where you are getting this from. Sure, there are a few ridiclous people out there who act out, but you must realize they are young and are seeking attention, nothing more. Don’t be so gullable. And I won’t even BEGIN to go into the ‘blood drinking habits’, because that, quick frankly, is just too ludicrous to even be taken seriously.
6. About the image: The blood is clearly fake, it’s for a epic effect. Duh? Go look at some pictures of real blood and then compare. You’ll see immediately.
7. The ‘gothic’ BBS is NOT illegal, if it were do you honestly think it would exist? Also, if you don’t know already, there is a disease (called porphyria) that literally makes humans desire the consumption of blood. It’s rare, but it’s real. Most of these people are put into insitutions, otherwise they are put through counseling. Taken straight from wikipedia: Some modern scholars have argued that vampire stories may have been influenced by a rare illness called porphyria. The disease is a blood disorder that disrupts the production of haem. Porphyria was thought to be more common than elsewhere in small Transylvanian villages (roughly 1000 years ago) where inbreeding probably occurred. However, the haem groups in porphyria sufferers causes uncontrollable tissue, bone and skin damage, made worse when the person comes into contact with sunlight. These people would have been very anemic, and drinking (animal) blood was a traditional treatment for anemia. The disease still exists today.
8. I’d like you to prove that every adult who takes on the ‘goth’ fashion has a plot to corrupt as many as possible. If you can’t, then your claim is a generalization and is void. I’d also like for you to prove that all adult ‘goths’ can’t survive in ‘polite’ society. It seems to me that many can, many have, and many will continue to do so. Again, this generalization is bias and thus is void of all factual value. I’d also like for you to record statistical proof that all who would be considered ‘goth’ in your eyes work in said business environments. Many become poets, writers, and amazing artists. I’d ALSO like for you to prove that all who would be considered ‘goth’ are lacking in friends. And even so, a few good friends beat one-hundred casual friends any day.
9. Black Metal is a genre of music, it is exclusive to a certain kind of music, none of the bands stated are even CLOSE to Black Metal. Marilyn Manson is shock rock. In flames is Death Metal. Slipknot is general rock. U2…hahaha…goth? Bauhaus is under the ‘gothic’ genre, but not for reasons in which you’d WANT them to be. It’s just a name of a genre of music, nothing more. I’m sure you haven’t even taken the time to actually LISTEN to any of the music you stated? Don’t post anymore up there if you haven’t actually listened to them, otherwise you’re statement is ignorant and is also deemed void of any factual value.
10. Goodness. Do you really wonder why there is so much hatred towards religious fanatics and religious followers in general? You make us look bad. Your accusations are lacking in sources and any credible evidence whatsoever. They are ignorant, shallow-minded…and only focus on what’s on the outside of a human. You of all people should know that a person should not be judged for how they appear on the outside, it’s what is inside that counts. I am however a Christian and have been going to church since I can remember, I am currently studying to become a nurse and therefore work part time at a well known supermarket chain.

Then again, to honestly answer your question, every one has a dark phase. I remember when I was going through that phase, I listened to the hard core carp. Na Palm Death, Cradle of Filth(hey’re Dooms metal, but they’re stil my favriot band, they’re so poetic, like modern day John Keats), Slayer some tmes, & a lot of other things. That hardcore stuff you could barly understand, lol. Then again, for me, unlike a lot of other ppl who just have a dark phase for no reason, I was actually going though a lot. I didn’t do any drugs, I’m still straight edge(no drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, ect. Never have, never will). I just dressed in black, whore chains, spikes, pvc leather, & that crap. I wasn’t Goth, was more would be metal head really. It wasn’t till I met a friend who inspired me to become a Goth(funny thing is she wasn’t Goth at all). Ok, what got me into this culture was not from watching a movie. I became one when I found out that I could actually be able to sit down with someone and have an intellectual conversation with someone, not about sports, or cars, but rather art, and Literature, and REAL music like Vivaldi, and and Handel. I was tired of being around people that all they could talk about was where they were gonna shoot their next deer. I don’t know about you but I would rather talk about something meaningful than blowing the brains out of an innocent, defencless deer. The goth subculture is a contemporary subculture found in many countries. It began in the United Kingdom during the early 1980s in the gothic rock scene, an offshoot of the post-punk genre. The goth subculture has survived much longer than others of the same era, and has continued to diversify. Its imagery and cultural proclivities indicate influences from nineteenth century Gothic literature along with horror movies and to a lesser extent the BDSM culture.
The goth subculture has associated tastes in music, aesthetics, and fashion, whether or not all individuals who share those tastes are in fact members of the goth subculture. Gothic music encompasses a number of different styles. Common to all is a tendency towards a lugubrious, mystical sound and outlook. Styles of dress within the subculture range from deathrock, punk, androgynous, Victorian, some Renaissance and Medieval style attire, or combinations of the above, most often with black attire, makeup and hair.
By the late 1970s, there were a few post-punk bands in the Germany labeled “gothic.” However, it was not until the early 1980s that gothic rock became its own subgenre within post-punk, and that followers of these bands started to come together as a distinctly recognizable movement. The scene appears to have taken its name from an article published in UK rock weekly Sounds: “The face of Punk Gothique”, written by Steve Keaton and published on February 21, 1981. The opening of the Batcave in London’s Soho in July 1982 provided a prominent meeting point for the emerging scene, which had briefly been labeled positive punk by the New Musical Express. The term “Batcaver” was later used to describe old-school goths.
Independent from the British scene, the late 1970s and early 1980s saw death rock branch off from American punk.[5] In 1980s and early 1990s, members of an emerging subculture in Germany were called Grufti[e]s (English “vault creatures” or “tomb creatures”); they generally followed a fusion of the gothic and new wave with an influence of new romantic, and formed the early stages of the “dark culture” (formerly called “dark wave culture”).
After the waning in popularity of post-punk, the subculture diversified both musically and visually. This caused variations in the “types” of goth. Local scenes also contributed to this variation. By the 1990s, Victorian fashion saw a renewed popularity in the goth scene, drawing on the mid-19th century gothic revival and the more morbid aspects of Victorian culture.
By the 1990s, the term “goth” and the boundaries of the associated subculture had become more contentious. New subcultures emerged, or became more popular, some of them being conflated with the goth subculture by the general public and the popular media. This conflation was primarily owing to similarities of appearance, social customs, and the fashions of the subcultures, rather than the musical genres of the bands associated with them. As time went on, the term was extended further in popular usage, sometimes to define groups that had neither musical nor fashion similarities to the original gothic subculture. This has led to the introduction of goth slang terms that some goths and others use to sort and label members of loosely related or at times unrelated subcultures.
The response of these psuedo-groups to the older subculture varies. Some, being secure in a separate subcultural identity, express offence at being called “goth” in the first place, while others choose to join the existing subculture on its own terms. Still others have simply ignored its existence, and decided to appropriate the term “goth” themselves, and redefine the idea in their own image. Even within the original subculture, changing trends have added to the complexity of attempting to define precise boundaries.
The bands that began the gothic rock and deathrock scene were limited in number, and included Bauhaus, Specimen, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Damned, Southern Death Cult, Ausgang, Sex Gang Children, 45 Grave, UK Decay, The Virgin Prunes, Kommunity FK, Alien Sex Fiend and Christian Death. Gloria Mundi, Joy Division, The Cure, This Mortal Coil, Dead Can Dance, mittageisen, early Adam and the Ants and Killing Joke have also been associated.
By the mid-eighties, the number of bands began proliferating and became increasingly popular, including The Sisters of Mercy, The Mission (known as The Mission UK in the US), Xmal Deutschland, The Bolshoi and Fields of the Nephilim. The nineties saw the further growth of eighties bands and emergence of many new bands. Factory Records, 4AD Records, and Beggars Banquet Records released much of this music in Europe, while Cleopatra Records among others released much of this music in the United States, where the subculture grew especially in New York, Los Angeles, and Orange County, California, with many nightclubs featuring “gothic/industrial” nights. The popularity of 4AD bands resulted in the creation of a similar US label called Projekt Records. This produces what is colloquially termed ethereal wave, a subgenre of dark wave music.
By the mid-1990s, styles of music that were heard in venues that goths attended ranged from gothic rock, death rock, industrial music, Gothabilly, EBM, ambient, experimental, synthpop, shoegazing, punk rock, 1970s glam rock, indie rock, to 1980s dance music. This variety was a result of the eclectic tastes of the members of the subculture.

The original Goths were an Eastern Germanic tribe who played an important role in the fall of the western Roman Empire. In some circles, the name “goth” later became pejorative: synonymous with “barbarian” and the uncultured due to the then-contemporary view of the fall of Rome and depictions of the pagan Gothic tribes during and after the process of Christianization of Europe. During the Renaissance period in Europe, medieval architecture was retroactively labeled gothic architecture, and was considered unfashionable in contrast to the then-modern lines of classical architecture.
In the United Kingdom, by the late 1700s, however, nostalgia for the medieval period led people to become fascinated with medieval gothic ruins. This fascination was often combined with an interest in medieval romances, Roman Catholic religion and the supernatural.
The gothic novel of the late eighteenth century, a genre founded by Horace Walpole with the 1764 publication of The Castle of Otranto, was accountable for the more modern connotations of the term gothic. He originally claimed that the book was a real medieval romance he had discovered and republished. Thus was born the gothic novel’s association with fake documentation to increase its effect. Henceforth, the term was associated with a mood of horror, morbidity, darkness and the supernatural as well as camp and self-parody. The gothic novel established much of the iconography of later horror literature and cinema, such as graveyards, ruined castles or churches, ghosts, vampires, nightmares, cursed families, being buried alive and melodramatic plots. An additional notable element was the brooding figure of the gothic villain, which developed into the Byronic hero. The most famous gothic villain is the vampire, a folklore legend of Eastern Europe and the Balkans, best known from Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula and the horror movies it influenced.
Certain elements in the dark, atmospheric music and dress of the post punk scene were clearly gothic in this sense. The use of gothic as an adjective in describing this music and its followers led to the term goth.
19th century
The Revolutionary War-era “American Gothic” story of the Headless Horseman, immortalized in Washington Irving’s story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” (published in 1820), marked the arrival in the New World of dark, romantic story-telling. The tale was composed by Irving while he was living in England, and was based on popular tales told by colonial Dutch settlers of New York’s Hudson River valley. The story was adapted to film in 1922, and in 1949, in the animated The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. It was readapted in 1980 and again in Tim Burton’s 1999 Sleepy Hollow. Burton, already famous through his films Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice and Batman, created a storybook atmosphere filled with darkness and shadow.
Throughout the evolution of goth subculture, classic romantic, gothic and horror literature has played a significant role. Keats, Poe, Lovecraft, Baudelaire and other tragic and romantic writers have become as emblematic of the subculture as has using dark eyeliner or dressing in black. Baudelaire, in fact, in his preface to Les Fleurs du mal (Flowers of Evil) penned lines that as much as anything can serve as a sort of goth malediction:

20th century influences
The influence of the gothic novel on the goth subculture can be seen in numerous examples of the subculture’s poetry and music, though this influence sometimes came second hand, through the popular imagery of horror films and television. The powerful imagery of horror movies began in German expressionist cinema after the first world war and then passed onto the Universal Studios films of the twenties and thirties, and then to the horror films of the English Hammer Studio. By the 1960s, TV series, such as The Addams Family and The Munsters, used these stereotypes for camp comedy. The Byronic hero, in particular, was a key precursor to the male goth image, while Dracula’s iconic portrayal by Bela Lugosi appealed powerfully to early goths. They were attracted by Lugosi’s aura of camp menace, elegance and mystique. Some people even credit the band Bauhaus’ first single “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”, released August 1979, with the start of the goth subculture, though many prior art house movements also influenced gothic fashion and style, the illustrations and paintings of Swiss artist, H.R Giger being one of the earliest. Notable other early examples include Siouxsie Sioux of the musical group Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Dave Vanian of the band The Damned. Some members of Bauhaus were, themselves, fine art students or active artists.

The movie featured gothic rock group Bauhaus performing “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” in a nightclub. In 1993, Whitby became the location for what became the UK’s biggest goth festival as a direct result of being featured in Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
A literary influence on the gothic scene was Anne Rice’s re-imagining of the idea of the vampire. Rice’s characters were depicted as struggling with eternity and loneliness, this with their ambivalent or tragic sexuality had deep attractions for many goth readers, making her works very popular in the eighties through the nineties.
Later media influences
As the subculture became well-established, the connection between goth and horror fiction became almost a cliché, with Goths quite likely to appear as characters in horror novels and film. For example, The Crow drew directly on goth music and style. Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed graphic novel series The Sandman influenced Goths with characters like the dark, brooding Dream and his sister Death.
Visual art influences

In particular their work is based on mystic, morbid and romantic motifs. In photography and painting the spectrum varies from erotic artwork to romantic images of vampires or ghosts. To be present is a marked preference for dark colours and sentiments, similar to Gothic fiction, Pre-Raphaelites or Art Nouveau. In the Fine Art field, Anne Sudworth is a well known goth artist with her dark, nocturnal works and strong Gothic imagery.

Defining an explicit ideology for the gothic subculture is difficult for several reasons. First is the overwhelming importance of mood and aesthetic for those involved. This is, in part, inspired by romanticism and neoromanticism. The allure for goths of dark, mysterious, and morbid imagery and mood lies in the same tradition of Romanticism’s gothic novel. During the late 18th and 19th century, feelings of horror, and supernatural dread were widespread motifs in popular literature; The process continues in the modern horror film. Balancing this emphasis on mood and aesthetics, another central element of the gothic is a deliberate sense of camp theatricality and self-dramatization; present both in gothic literature as well as in the gothic subculture itself.
Goths, in terms of their membership in the subculture, are usually not supportive of violence, but rather tolerant. Many in the media have incorrectly associated the Goth subculture with violence, hatred of minorities, white supremacy, and other acts of hate. However, violence and hate do not form elements of goth ideology; rather, the ideology is formed in part by recognition, identification, and grief over societal and personal evils that the mainstream culture wishes to ignore or forget. These are the prevalent themes in goth music.[6]
The second impediment to explicitly defining a gothic ideology is goth’s generally apolitical nature. While individual defiance of social norms was a very risky business in the nineteenth century, today it is far less socially radical. Thus, the significance of goth’s subcultural rebellion is limited, and it draws on imagery at the heart of Western culture. Unlike the hippie or punk movements, the goth subculture has no pronounced political messages or cries for social activism. The subculture is marked by its emphasis on individualism, tolerance for diversity, a strong emphasis on creativity, tendency toward intellectualism, a dislike of social conservatism, and a mild tendency towards cynicism, but even these ideas are not universal to all goths. Goth ideology is based far more on aesthetics and simplified ethics than politics.
Goths may, indeed, have political leanings ranging from left-liberal to anarchist, but they do not express them specifically as part of a cultural identity. Instead, political affiliation, like religion, is seen as a matter of personal conscience. Unlike punk, there are few clashes between political affiliation and being “goth”. Similarly, there is no common religious tie that binds together the goth movement, though spiritual, supernatural and religious imagery has played a part in gothic fashion, song lyrics and visual art. In particular, aesthetic elements from Catholicism often appear in goth culture. Reasons for donning such imagery range from expression of religious affiliation to satire or simply decorative effect.[6]
While involvement with the subculture can be fulfilling, it also can be risky, especially for the young, because of the negative attention it can attract due to public misconceptions of goth subculture. Investigators of the incident, five months later, stated that there was no involvement between the goth subculture and the killers, who held goth music in contempt.[11]
The Dawson College shooting, in Canada, also raised public concern with the goth scene. Kimveer Gill, who killed one and injured nineteen, maintained an online journal at a web site, VampireFreaks, in which he “portrayed himself as a gun-loving Goth.”[12] The day after the shooting it was reported that “it are rough times for industrial / goth music fans these days as a result of yet another trench coat killing”, implying that Gill was involved in the goth subculture.[12] During a search of Gill’s home, police found a letter praising the actions of Columbine shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold and a CD titled “Shooting sprees ain’t no fun without Ozzy and friends LOL”.[13] Although the shooter claimed an obsession for “Goth”, his favorite music list was described, by the media, as a “who’s who of heavy metal.[14][15]
Mick Mercer, author, noted music journalist, and world’s leading historian of Goth music[16][17][18] stated, of Kimveer Gill, that he was “not a Goth. Never a Goth. The bands he listed as his chosen form of ear-bashing were relentlessly Metal and standard Grunge, Rock and Goth metal, with some Industrial presence.”, “Kimveer Gill listened to metal”, “He had nothing whatsoever to do with Goth” and further commented “I realise that like many Neos this idiot may even have believed he somehow was a Goth, because they’re only really noted for spectacularly missing the point.” Mercer emphasized that he was not blaming heavy metal music for Gill’s actions and added “It doesn’t matter actually what music he liked.”[19]
Another school shooting that was wrongly attributed to the goth subculture is the Red Lake High School massacre[20]. Jeff Weise killed 7 people, and was believed by a fellow student to be into the goth culture: wearing “a big old black trench coat,” and listening to heavy metal music. Weise was also found to participate in neo-nazi online forums.[21]
Other murders which are attributed to people suspected of being part of the goth culture include the Scott Dyleski killing,[22] and the Richardson family murders,[23][24] although neither of these cases raised the same amount of media attention as the school shootings.
In part because of public misunderstanding and ignorance surrounding gothic aesthetics, goths sometimes suffer prejudice, discrimination, and intolerance. As is the case with members of various other controversial subcultures and alternative lifestyles, outsiders sometimes marginalize goths, either by intention or by accident.[25] Goths, like any other alternative sub-culture sometimes suffer intimidation, humiliation, and, in extreme cases, physical violence for their involvement with the subculture.[10]
In 2006 four goths were attacked in San Diego California by a Navy man and his brother resulting in one goth, Jim Howard, having to be rushed to the hospital. The perpetrators of this attack were found guilty in August 2007 on four related accounts, two of which were felonies. It was made clear that the goths were assaulted due to their subculture affiliation. This can be otherwise known as a “hate crime” though the San Diego courts do not recognize this attack as such at this time.[26][27][28]
On August 11, 2007, two goths, walking through Stubbylee Park in Bacup, Lancashire, England were attacked by a group of teenagers because they were goths. Sophie Lancaster subsequently died from her injuries. [29][30] On April 29, 2008, two teens Ryan Herbert and Brendan Harris were convicted for the murder of Lancaster and given life sentences, three others were given lesser sentences for the assault on her boyfriend Robert Maltby. In delivering the sentence Judge Anthony Russell stated “This was a hate crime against these completely harmless people targeted because their appearance was different to yours.” He went on to defend the goth community, calling goths “perfectly peaceful, law-abiding people who pose no threat to anybody.”[31][32][33] Judge Russell add that he “recognised it as a hate crime without Parliament having to tell him to do so, and had included that view in his sentencing.”[34] Despite this ruling, a bill to add discrimination based on subculture affiliation to the definition of hate crime in British law did not pass.[35]
A study published on the British Medical Journal concluded that “identification as belonging to the Goth subculture [at some point on their lives] was the best predictor of self harm and attempted suicide [among young teens]“, and that it was most possibly due to a selection mechanism (persons that wanted to harm themselves later identified as goths, thus raising the percentage of those persons who identify as goths). The study was based on a sample of 15 teenagers who identified as goths, of which 8 had self-harmed by any method, 7 had self-harmed by cutting, scratching or scoring, and 7 had attempted suicide.[36][37][38] The authors said that most self-harm by teens was done before joining the subculture, and that joining the subculture would actually protect them and help them deal with distress in their lives.[37][38] The authors insisted on the study being based on small numbers and on the need of replication to confirm the results.[37][38] The study was criticized for using a small sample of goth teens and not accounting for neither other influencing factors nor for differences between different types of goth, among other things.[39]
