A True History of Linux
In my first article on Linux, I allerted my fellow conservatives to the liberalconspiracy that threatens our Nation’s IT Infrastructure. My next article compared the Linux and Windows operating systems, thus debunking much of the hype associated with this upstart. With this article, I would like to dispel many of the myths that surround the cult of Linux, with a view to exposing it’s real origins.
Ask any Linux hacker where Linux came from, and they will surely inform you that it was written from scratch by the Finnish programmer Linus Torvalds. They will tell you that he started by writing the “Kernel”.
Fact File: What is a Kernel? This component is used for typing in simple commands like “dir” and “more”. Windows has a component called “cmd.exe” which serves a similar purpose but comes with better commands. Windows programmers often use a modern graphical user interface in preference to a kernel, however Linux users do not have this luxuary.
According to legend Torvalds soon attracted a cult of self-confessed “hackers” who were able to further his goals. Many of these hackers are known only by their initials.

“P.J.”: Runs the pro-Linux hate-site “Groklaw“. His true identity is a secret, known only to the inner-circle of Linux hackers. His contributions to the Linux computer program are also a secret.
We are expected to believe that the modern Linux just came about as a result of these amateur programmers, and until 2003 most technical people chose not to question these bizarre claims. Anybody familiar with the huge costs of building a modern operating system like Microsoft Windows Vista will know that this claim is somewhat unfeasible. In 2003
a company called SCO Group, the invenors of the “UNIX” operating system noticed something odd about Linux. Substantial portions of their own product called “SCO Unixware” were very similar to the published “source code” of Linux. They commissioned a major MIT study to discover if Linux was a copy of UNIX and were amazed at what they had found:
Fact File: What is source code? Old computer programs were distributed as source-code on magnetic tape. This is an obsolete way to distribute software that was used before the availablity of the more convenient “Binary” format. Even today, some programs (such as those written by GNU) are released as source code only. Perversely, this is to prevent the software from being used outside the fraternity of computer hackers.
“…we turned 3 different teams of code programmers loose on the codebases of AIX, Unix and Linux. And they came back with – independently – we had the three teams – one was a set of high-end mathematcians, rocket scientist, modeling type guys. Another team was based on standard programmer types. A third team were really spiffy on agent technology and how all of this technology was built in the first place. So the three teams came back independently and validated that there wasn’t just a little bit of code showing up inside of Linux from our Unix intellectual property base. There was actually a mountain of code showing up in there.” – Darl McBride, CEO SCO Group.
Darl, the charismatic leader of SCO Group, and a commited Christian claims that Linux hackers stole “Source Code” from his company.
SCO Group dropped a bombshell on the world of Linux. The evidence strongly suggested that this group of hackers had stolen the methods and concepts from their more advanced rival products, and worse still, major corporations had been colluding with the Linux hackers: Darl added, “Prior to IBM’s involvement, Linux was the software equivalent of a bicycle. Unix was the software equivalent of a luxury car. To make Linux acceptable to enterprise customers, it must be redesigned to become the software equivalent of a luxury car. This redesign was not technologically feasible without access to Unix code, methods and concepts.” In 2004, Forbes columnist Daniel Lyons wrote that SCO group had found a “Smoking Gun” – literally mountains of evidence that SCO’s intellectual property had been violated. But dont take his word for it, many leading tech analysts and journalists who once listed themselves as Linux admirers, have since turned their back on the beleaguered operating
system:
Maureen O’Gara, used to publish a journal called “Linuxgram”. After SCO’s damning revelations few businesses could afford to take Linux seriously. When she threatened to close down her popular journal, Linux activists working for P.J. ran a campaign of intimidation and dis-information in order to discredit the already disgruntled journalist. With friends like this, even the most ardent Linux enthusuast might be forced to think again. A leading tech analyst once a loyal IBM employee was forced to conclude: “IBM made a serious mistake in introducing Unix code into Linux without proper notification to? Or approval from SCO, which is the current, documented owner of Unix. The issue should have been fully vetted before Linux was compromised. The end result is a complex, no-holds-barred war against a much smaller company in an attempt to cover up and mitigate this mistake. In the process, the Linux community, in support of IBM, has been duped into using illegal means to attack SCO in the nastiest release of viruses the world has ever seen. The rest of us are used as cannon fodder in this virus plague.” – Rob Enderle, Principal analyst of the Enderle Group.
Rob turned away from Linux when he learnt of it’s criminality. He could in good faith continue contributing to the “Linux Community”.
Samizdat, the report by Ken Brown of AdTI. This book destroyed what little credibility Linux had left!
And if that was not enough, one of the most respected consulting organizations, The Alexis de Tocqueville Institution corroborated SCO’s allegations in their widely praised report “Samizdat”. This study proved beyond all doubt that Linux was in fact derived from a wide range other computer programs. It’s developers had re-used concepts from Unix without licensing the valuable patents: The Linux developers were stealing from American companies:

Three years on from these shock revelations, Linux is still recovery. Linus Torvalds, who is often described as “Dictator for Life” is still in charge of this troubled program. He has finally recognized the need to clean up this mess and has ordered a complete overhaul of the Linux operating system. Meanwhile Microsoft Windows Vista is nearing completion, and is sure to be the most advanced and valuable computer program ever written. With Linux usage in decline, this could be the beginning of the end for Linux.
Most tech analysts agree that the struggle between SCO Group vs the IBM / Linux conspiracy is akin to David vs Goliath. It may be that SCO Group have already won their case, as IBM’s lawyers have prevented disclosure of many important documents that would vindicate SCO. (Pic by JAE)

I am only making a general comment about this website. I come from switzerland (one of the wealthiest country in the world)so sorry for my english, it is far from beeing perfect.
I don’t believe in god, but i hope you agree the fact that people all have different idea of the world, and i hope you can still argue with people who disagree with your theory (or is it already forbidden in US?). What i believe in, is that we, all the human beeing, are quite similar, in our way of thinking.
Now how is it possible that most of these human beeing disagree with you (look at the comments). Don’t you think our idea come from the fact we are observing, and then we deduce all our convictions on these fact? So maybe your believes are based on lies! Personally, I always watch out when i get an info or an idea. I always get several different sources to make my mind, and i always watch out not making big generalisation (like for germany, about 100 millions people, you judge all them on some cases, even if there is 100′000 racists there, which i doubt, it’s only 0.1% of the population)
Do you know what we hear about America here? (I have a lot of Amercian friends who agree) We hear that your country is getting more and more inegal. On average, this is a wealthy country, but there is more and more poor people and the rich get more and more rich. We hear that your medias are trying to hide this to you so people think they live in a perfect country. We use images from Wikimedia (and other sources) in order to make our stories more easily understood by our liberal readers. The pictures puntuate the stories and inject a moment of levity into what would otherwise be a serious, well-researched, highly technical document.

This is utter crap, and even the smallest modicum of research would’ve improved your understanding. Go and speak to *any* person with a computer science degree and they’ll set you right. The part of the operating system that manages the execution of simple commands is conventionally called the “operating system shell” (or just “shell” for short), or sometimes the “command line.” Unix tends to talk about the shell, windows tends to talk about the command line. This is something fundamentally different to the operating system kernel. The “kernel” on the other hand, is the most basic level of software that manages the resources in the computer, that is, the disk drives, memory, keyboard, display and so on. It presents a consistent interface for other programs (like the shell) to use. Without the kernel, every program would’ve had to do its own management of all the computer hardware, and chaos would reign.

Another thing – I was also an undergrad computer science student when Linus (also an undergrad at the time) started working on his pet project and essentially saw Linux as it developed from very modest beginnings to something which was useful enough to host the rest of the GNU tools on… It’s all true, however much you don’t want to believe it.

Okay where to begin on debunking your Post and not to mention correcting a hell of a lot of factual flaws that in your ignorance you have no researched.
First of all, In actual fact Windows was originally came with DOS hard coded into it and because the GUI(graphical user interface) was originally fairly limited in what it could do alot of the actions in windows were through the Dos prompt, many of the original users didnt have any choice in this, The windows COmmand prompt however is a final remainder of the DOS hard coding that has now been almost completly removed from Windows XP(NT 5). However if they are infact windows programmers they would be using a combination of both the ‘kernel’ and the GUI.
Linux users DO however have the option to use a GUI over a straight Kernel in certain versions of the Operationg system.
Secondly, if you did some more reasearch you would find that there are only SOME vendors of LINUX that are in dispute with the SCO group, the versions such as REDHAT Linux that are able to be purchased at your local computer store next to Windows in the OS isle for anywhere from 200-600 dollars. Please also note that LINUX is used to run ALOT of the internet and other Networks that form the internet as a whole.

- Linux was infact created by UNIX after UNIX was released. Linux is Based on the UNIX system, however it was infact altered enough to be considered a new program, thus Linus is infact the creator. The Samzidat Says this.

Upon reading the report by Ken brown… i have yet to see any destruction of the credibility of Linux, rather it goes into intricate detail of how Linux came to exist. Linux was released to the public.. not stolen. And it is true that SCO has filed a lawsuit against IBM in 2003 but it was dismissed in 2004 as there was no viable evidence to support the claim.

- This is so incorrect it is not funny. Source code is the basic code that forms any computer program, It is what runs in the background behind windows, Linux, Mac OSX, games, Internet exploror or any thing you open on your computer.

The source code is then converted into Machine code when it is compiled (Binary)

When you write that the computer programs were originally released in source code on tapes, Its almost as if you have taken the wikipedia definition at face value. Source code is readable logically by humans but when it is printed out or recorded on tape it is in its uncompiled state allowing it to be edited.
It is by no means an OLD way of distributing programs, but rather a Certain FORM that the Program is in. Linux was released ‘open source’ not because it is using an outdated method but so that it is uncompiled and people can freely change the code before it is compiled and turned into machine code.

Linux is not in any sort of recovery from anything at all, torvalds has only started to ‘realise’ that the current version of Linux, Linux 2.5 is in need of an upgrade because it is buggy. And microsofts Vista is no where near completion, there is no suich thing as a complete product they will keep giving out updates and upgrades, i myself will not be convertion to VIsta, if i do it would only be to play HALO 2 on PC and yes, im playing computer games and i support the use of linux..

First, I must thank you for taking so much of your time to write this well-researched article that once again tells the truth about Linux. Linux-using liberal extremists are going to hate you for this, but the truth is not always easy to accept, especially after having been in the dark for so long; their reactions show us the extent of their hateful indoctrination for anything better than Linux. I bet most of them are too blind to see, yet there’s still hope that a few readers will understand and revert to a good American-made Windows program.
I don’t have your level of knowledge on this matter, so I’m not gonna dissert on the topic, but one thing is sure: I don’t trust this “free” program no more than you do. After all, nobody gives out free stuff in this world these days without a good reason. It’s usually a commercial reason, to make us buy something else, but in this case I doubt that this is the real goal of Linux developers. These godless people try to convince the rest of the world they’re just a bunch of philanthropic guys working on a program for the welfare of Humanity, for free. I don’t buy this piece of shit, excuse my language. There has to be a shameful reason these developers are ashamed of and try to hide through the use of a wide-spread propaganda. But a true American Patriot can’t just trust a bunch of unknown developers in an unknown number of unknown foreign communist/islamofascist countries. Obviously, this program made in countries loathing America is trying to spy on our lifestyles in order to destabilize our country, either by economic spying, or by providing vital and personal information to liberal and terrorist lobbies. This is why this program should be banned from our country.
I also have to add that from what I have personally experienced, Linux is impossible to use for the average people. Every time you need to plug in a mouse, a printer, a webcam or something like that, you have to painfully search the web for the proper driver, then try to install it, and when it doesn’t work try to find the solution all by yourself. This is another reason to be suspicious: unlike Windows, Linux is extremely opaque. Microsoft has a customer service, books on their programs explaining how they work, and other kind of useful information on the web; Linux is so complex that you usually never find the information you need, and if you do, only after days or weeks of fruitless research. In other words, you usually have to trust foreigners once again to fix the “problem”, and that is definitely not a good thing. On Windows, those devices can just be plugged in without further action.
Tristan, you are not only a true American Christian Patriot, but also a Hero. Writing such an article requires great courage, for Linux bloodthirsty beasts are now going to attack your site relentlessly. The Facts: Pretty much true, Linus developed Linux because he wanted to create an operating system that exceeded the capabilities of Minix, a Unix distribution that was being used at his University.

The kernel is a program that constitutes the central core of a computer operating system, and has complete control over everything that occurs in the system. It doesn’t ever directly interface with the user, but instead interfaces with the shell and/or other programs, which the user then interacts with. You’re mistaking the kernel for a shell in this case. And no, you’ll find that Linux users have the luxury of a graphical user interface, along with a range of shells with comprehensive commands, giving them much more control over their system than a Windows user.

You’re actually referring to a group of programmers, and most certainly not a cult. Your user of the word “hacker” is also out of context, due to the fact that you’re not giving any indication as to whether you’re referring to the media depicted model or the actuality of the matter.

Hah, I think the deal with eMac has already been dealt with, but for your information word-processors that will run under linux include Pico, Nano, Vi, OpenOffice Writer and MS Word. You’re also in violating of the GFDL, the license under which Wikipedia content is provided, because what you’ve released her doesn’t comply with that license. Nice going with your comprehensive “research” into these matters, chump.

What a laugh, heh. Modern linux distributions came about as a result of these programmers working with the Linux kernel and branching off into various projects with dedicated teams working on their development. If you knew anything about Linux at all, you’d know that companies such as Red Hat, Mandriva and Novell all develop Linux distributions with their own teams of coders and external contributors. Linux doesn’t incur such huge costs in production because the release cycle is substantially faster, with development versions for bug-testing available much more readily, allowing rapid-development due to the speed with which problems are isolated and corrected. You should also note that Microsoft Windows Vista has cost so much to develop, due to the fact that the project is grossly off-scheduale due to incompetence within the company. Using them as a benchmark is far from realistic.

Your fact files are disgusting. If you’d ever compiled a program from source, you’d know that the reason for doing so is to allow for bug-testing and to allow for certain components and options that can only be decided during the compile process to be selected by the user in question. Compiling a program from source is NOT hard as you seem to believe, as most source code packages come with instructions on how to successfully compile the program.

Yeah, sure they did. SCO Group filed a law suit against Linux claiming that their copyrighted source code was within the Linux kernel. Immediately after this, they attempted to file suit against Novell, in order to get Novell to transfer the copyright for Unix to them. So technically speaking, from a legal standpoint, SCO had no claim over the Unix source code at the time, and Novell, who held the rights at that time, had no qualms with Unix source being in Linux – especially given that Novell own and produce SuSE Linux, hence meaning that there really is no issue here. Nothing more than smoke and mirrors, and a big publicity stunt to attempt to discredit Linux. This entire line is a load of crap, given the issues of legality with SCO claiming they had rights over something they later admitted they did not have posession of the rights to. Their claims were falsified, as is this entire section of your pathetic post.

Verify your claim. Who amongst the IT industry (and competitors such as SCO, Apple and Microsoft do NOT count for self-interest reasons) calls Linus a “Dictator for Life”. Who says that it’s “troubled”? I fail to see why a company like Novell would bother continuing with a “troubled” product, or why Linux would be the operating system of choice for IT professionals, server administrators, webhosts, chat-servers and internet service providers.

Microsoft Windows Vista is grossly off-scheduale, and tipped even by Windows supporters to be an anticipated behemoth disaster. Microsoft stripped the majority of the new OS’s proudly boasted features, including an entirely new file system. Microsoft are not above recycling old and defunct code, with examples such as Windows 2000 (which was in actuality nothing more than WindowsNT with Service Pack 6 in a new box with another name) and it’s later followup WindowsXP being heavily NT based, and due to the shortcuts required to allow Microsoft to release Vista within a year of going over their proclaimed deadline, I can’t imagine that they’d be about to stop here. If Windows is so great, why are countries like Spain and Taiwan developing and using Linux distributions for professional use rather than use Microsoft products? Why did the state of Massachusetts choose to abandon Microsoft’s proprietary .doc format for the OpenOffice alternative?
The answer is simple. Microsoft products are not the be-all and end-all of the computing world, nor are they by far the most dependable or the most advanced. You’ve claimed in previous articles that Linux opens systems up to all manner of vulunerabilities, but you forget that the majority of viruses to hit the internet have been coded for and aimed at Windows operating systems, as they are NOT equipped with any means of protecting the system’s integrity, not by a long shot, whereas a standard Linux distribution always comes with security measures in place.
Given the extreme inaccuracy of this apalling excuse for an article, I can’t see how you can possibly understand what I’ve just tried to tell you. Maybe you never will. It’s people like you that hold the rest of humanity back with your archaic views and insidious lies. You seem to snap at all the lies and misconceptions you can to feed a hopeless delirium of inadequacy you feel within your life, and in doing so think that by expelling the things you get out of it on a blog makes them in some way accurate.

I am a christian (Baptist), a strict conservative (Republican), a Linux Users, and a capitalist. As a Christian I value the truth, and insist on the whole truth. As a conservative I value life (I am pro-life), the truth (once again), I also value my rights (right to bear arms, and such), and I also support our government and soldiers in the war. As a linux user I value being able to see what my computer is doing and fixing it.
As a capitalist I can see how Linux is attractive to major corporations such as IBM (their bigger than microsoft), RedHat (They package and sell Linux), Autozone, Chrysler, Bank of America, ect. The thing is each of these companies use and/or sell Linux. According to a MS-Word document released by SCO they planned to sue Bank of America but then changed the letter for DaimlerChrysler.
SCO has claimed one thing to the SEC, where it is required to tell the truth, and claimed yet another in court filing, where it is also supposed to tell the truth. SCO has even made contradictory claims in different courts. SCO has claimed to have “Mountains of evidence” yet tells the court that it didn’t exist. SCO claims to be a defender of IP, yet they have BSD code in their OS without the BSD copyright in place as was shown when they claimed the netfilter code was theirs. so they don’t exactly tell the truth.

Kernel : Even I know what a kernel is. It is not the shell or command line like you say it is the main thing of an operating the most important one and even windows has one. BTW windows’ kernel is awfully full of bugs and vulnerabilities unlike linux’
Open Source:
It is helluva easy to type ./configure then make then sudo make install . You don’t have to be a hacker to compile source code and even so there are binary distributions for most of the linux programs.
Source code distribution has the advantage that you can do processor specific optimizations so it would run much faster than binary distributions.
They also have the major advantage of allowing True Cross Platform Software.

And to answer the last 3 questions, I do use linux, I use it much more than windows XP why? Because it is faster! Much faster actually. Also OpenOffice is much better for homework than MSOffice and I feel 30000 more efficient when I use OpenOffice.

Words can not express my concern over this blog site. As a conservative Christian, it deeply troubles me that you would use lies and half truths to support your position. You lose all credibility when you construct an argument that is not based on fact. Many of the “sources” you site have been proven false or incorrect quite a while back. Really, thats interesting. I run gentoo linux ( http://www.gentoo.org) which I admit is not the easiest to install, I chose it for the challenge and have been aptly rewarded with a fully functional, much more stable than windows operating system. I recently bought a wireless mouse and keyboard for my computer. I plugged it in, booted into windows and inserted the driver disk. It didnt work before or after I installed the windows drivers until I rebooted, removed the drivers and rebooted again. Then I booted into linux and it worked, without chaning a config file or looking for a single driver. I have to admit, I expected the exact opposite, and bought the keyboard/mouse expecting that it might not work in linux as it was a noname brand and I wanst sure that it woulpd comform to the usb standards. Same thing with my external hard drive, music player, camera, and webcam. For all but the webcam, a quick edit to my /etc/fstab file and a mount -a had all of them working properly. The webcam required a kernel rebuild to add the necesary drivers, but then it worked. Granted in windows I just had to plug the camera et al in and they worked, but at the same time windows would have run any malicious code that may be present on such a device whereas linux wouldnt. Sounds safer to me.
BTW windows has a kernel too, and microsoft writes source code for all of there programs, this is how programs are created. Interesting that an IT manager wouldnt know anything about windows. You would have to interact with the kernel at some point to do IT. Maybe you did IT on a linux/UNIX box? Or maybe your mother drank too much when she was pregnant with you. That would explain your disposition.
I have been thinking. It is rather coincedental that a former IT manager from tuttle starts posting anti-linux remarks on some extremists blog only a short period of time after the Tuttle cities IT manager Jerry L Taylor is made to look like an idiot by the open source community for mistaking centOS for a virus. When people are writing too each other, by email or by snail mail or on a blog or whatever, they often use some identifiable shorthand rather than the whole name. PJ is Pamela Jones apparently, and RMS is Richard M Stallman. Those people to whom he writes know that that is his identifier, it is as if you wrote to your child and put T.S at the end, or dad, or father or whatever. Its not code, just shorthand. Anyone who knows anything about open source knows that RMS is Richard Stallman, and for your info, RMS has little to no direct connection to linux, rather to GNU (GNU’s Not UNIX) which he has helped to develope. And RMS invented EMACS, not eMac. They are not the same thing, at all. EMACS isnt even the main editor for GNU/linux computers, many use VI, VIM, nano, etc. And yes, EMACS is hard to use if you are a monkey and dont take five minutes to RTFM (read the ____ing manual). BTW visual studio isnt much of anything special, many developers use linux to write code and have no need for visual studio.

Please understand that STR.com raises money for good causes, such as the Republican Party and other organisations which promote conservative ideals and family-values. Last year we raised more than $7000, mostly from donations from our readers and local friends; All of this was distributed to good causes.
We occasionally recieve requests for money from churches. Westboro came to Mike for a small grant (less than $200) to help them make Bible educational posters. I really do not see what the problem is. I dont know anything about picketing soldiers funerals; As you know we are strongly pro-armed forces, and like our president we would do anything to support our veterans. Microsoft also does this when they create programs. Do you honestly think that the developers at Microsoft are authoring applications using nothing but 0s and 1s? That is what binaries are: 0s and 1s. We use the programming languages because it would be impossible to do it any other way.
Microsoft has binary executable files, usually called .exe. Similarly, Linux can use binary executables. The most common forms are .rpm and .deb, however there are many more.

Also, Unix and *nix-based operating systems have been around for far longer than Windows. I don’t hate Microsoft. I think they make several decent applications. However, I think Windows is only good for certain environments.

Emacs isn’t an Apple computer either. It is a cli (commandline interface) application. It can be used as a word processor, or a programming environment. Another similar application is called vi.
However, this is far from the only word processor that exists for Linux. Open Office has been around for years, and Sun Star Office (which Open Office is the open-source version of) has been around even longer. Before that even was around there was WordPerfect. Ever heard of Corel? Back in the day, they used to make a Linux distro, and an Office Suite for Linux, Windows, and Macintosh. Nowadays there is also Abiword and Kword, among many others.

Linux is not the only open-source operating system. There is also BSD. Note that Apple’s Mac OSX is based on similar UNIX code found in BSD. Is Apple also communist? Also, sun makes Solaris, which is unix-based. IBM, HP, and many other major industry companies develop unix-based operating systems.
Now, I realize that many people are communist. Probably many people who use Linux as a political statement are communist. But I can assure you, that 99.9% of people who use it, are not using it because of anything political.
Personally, I use it because it’s not only free, but in my opinion, much better than Windows XP. I have set it up for other people as well, and they ALL say the same thing. We are all using Ubuntu Linux. I can now do everything that I could do in a Windows environment and it doesn’t cost me a single penny when they release the upgrade every six months. How often does Microsoft release their OS? About every five years, at about $250.00 USD. Then in between, they issue service packs to make up for flaw after flaw of not-so-good code, that introduces a slew of security vulnerabilities.
I have nothing against Microsoft, but for me, they lost. Linux allows me to be in total control of my computer. MS does not. It is a tyranny. It barely even lets me choose between two desktop themes, for crying out loud! With Linux, I can pretty much do anything, and it improves literally nightly.
I predict that Linux will be much bigger than it is, in the near future.
Lastly, why are you comparing Linux with Microsoft Vista? Vista is not even released yet. They released it in beta, and it is so buggy, they had to push back the release, another six months.

Well maybe you should be a bit more careful about the organisations you donate money to, if you do some research yourself or read the link I provided you will see they are anything but Christians and in my opionion anti-american. They protests at soldiers funerals, noone not even the most anti-war protester is doing that. America was stronger as a result of the war. It actually propelled our economy and created industry and manufacturing; not to mention technology.
Yes, we didn’t go into Europe right away. We officially entered the War when we were attacked by Imperial Japan. However, this doesn’t mean a thing about how and why Nazi Germany was defeated. The Nazis conquered much of Europe and part of Africa in a very small time period. They were able to accomplish this with their war machine technology. However, it wasn’t until the American and Soviet intervention, that the Nazis were pushed back to Berlin. After the war was declared over, the Soviets made their move. Again, we were reluctant, yet, the atrocities that the Soviets did, could not be ignored. The Soviet aggression was actually, much worse than Nazi Germany, but over a much longer period of time.
Now bear in mind, that at the beginning of WWII, the Soviets and the Nazis had a pact. This was called the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact. Essentially what this was meant to do, was to allow Germany to invade Poland without Soviet intervention. In return, the USSR was able to move in to the Baltics to provide a land zone to protect Russia from invasion from the West. Germany invaded Poland without Soviet intervention. The Soviets continued their own human atrocities without being bogged down by the Western European war. The reason Germany agreed to this pact, was because they wanted to avoid a two front war. however, in June of 1941, Germany invaded Soviet territory anyway. Thus, USSR was thrust into the war. The USSR had its own ambitions of domination across the European continent, as we later saw especially after Berlin fell.
Six months after USSR joined the war, America was attacked by Imperial Japan. We declared war against the Japanese directly. We also declared war against Germany, but not the Soviet Union. Since the Soviets were fighting Nazi German forces on the Eastern Front, we allowed this to happen, to weaken the German forces. We attacked the Japanese by sea and air. We attacked Germany by air and land. These were two separate wars for America, yet one huge war.
This whole time the the Allies were fighting the Germans –America, the USSR, Imperial Japan, and Germany, were in an arms race to build the perfect super-weapon. Obviously, America prevailed in this, although some interesting weapons were largely experimented with; including lasers and gamma ray guns.
Besides super-weapons, all of these powers, including also Britain, developed much more advanced conventional weapons, warships, airplanes, and missiles.
To sum it up, not only did America help to defeat the Nazis from expansion, they, along with the Soviet Union, crushed their Army and Air Force. America provided not only strength, but hope. Most of all, America provided technological advances that helped to defeat the Nazis and Imperial Japanese.
After Germany was defeated, the USSR continued its aggression across Europe.
It was again, American forces, chiefly left over from WWII in Europe, that formed the wall between the East and the West. To this day, we still have bases and soldiers in that part of the world, left over from our protective service that we provided, granted in our best interest –not yours. We really didn’t want to be surrounded by a bunch of commies, you know. Much of this Soviet aggression spans a large majority of the 20th century.
THERE IS YOUR HISTORY LESSON.
Again, if not for America, there is a good chance that your county would not exist as you know it. I’m not really asking for a thank you (although it might be a friendly gesture). But all of this talk that America is somehow evil, is silly. It sounds a lot like Soviet propaganda. What are you going to say next, that the Soviets were the good guys?
Again, I do not see how this has turned into a political debate, other than the fact that this is a political blog. Note that I do not agree with very much of what it says. But this particular thread somehow makes a political debate out of computer software. It’s mind bogglingly (is that a word?) interesting.

As far as the Native Americans, um, who exactly came here and started slaughtering natives? Wasn’t it Europeans? The Spanish and French killed more native Americans than anyone else. Granted there were many human atrocities and/or what could be considered genocide after the US Revolution. However, you act as if the Native nations never provoked attack, by attacking first. This is just historically wrong.
This was also over a century ago. I do not think that European countries (with the exception of some of the weaker in might) can say anything to any American about Imperial expansion and/or aggression. Before WWI, much of the world was colonized by the English, the French, the Spanish, and the Dutch.
Now, I am not accusing you, or being critical of your own genocides. You know what you did. Or maybe you don’t. Perhaps you can visit a library. At any rate, America, for the most part, stands for good.
While you [liberals] will disagree with our War on Terror, I will remind you that we lost 3000 on one day. Now we are fighting to ensure that this never happens again, to us or anyone else. So go ahead and stand in the way of our fighting evil. If you do, ask yourself this: which side do you stand on? Do you stand on the side of those who behead innocent people who have different beliefs other than your own, or are you instead tolerant enough to help others enjoy the same human freedoms that you, yourself take for granted.
I am not bashing your country, and I ask you politely, to please not bash mine. As far as I thought, the E.U. is our friend.
I am proud of who I am and where I come from, and so should you be. I see nothing wrong with that at all. I will defend my country, because to me, America is more than just a piece of earth, between to oceans. It is a way of life. This has nothing to do with right vs. left. Anybody who thinks otherwise, isn’t a very good American. A great man once said: “It’s not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”. This statement transcends Republicans vs. Democrats.
Yes, I am a Patriot of America, and I am proud to say it. I do believe that Shelly is not. I do not believe that she is a real Christian either. Real Christians do not make statements about what operating systems that Christ himself, would prefer. I’m pretty sure that the Messiah does not need a computer.

SCO never had the rights nor ever owned the Unix/Linux source. They where given permission to develop the code, that’s all. SCO’s claim was like having you friend borrow your car and then claim it was his car. Pretty pathetic, the case was dissmissed in 2004 for lack of evidence.
BTW I got a hold of Osama over the weekend and he told me he only uses Windows as per agreement with Microsoft’s terrorist network.

I am not sure whether it is worth taking the time to write or it is absolutely a hopeless try to somewhat lead you away from this everybody-is-evil theory.
I am a Christian and it is the most important thing that leads me in life. I am also a student of computer science. I use Linux every day and use Windows as little as possible – partly beause I find Linux better than Windows and partly because I really, really think it has a better, more generous phylosophy behind it.
I won’t repeat the comments before mine: your article contains obvious mistakes and misunderstandings about what software or an operating system is, and how Linux was written. I just want to point out two important things:
1. As far as I can see your article was written because you find Linux and other open source communities a threat to our society because _they are liberal_. Instead, you prefer companies like SCO and Microsoft – the former is known about its _lies_ (beyond the fact that NONE of their accusations were proved they stated many obvious lies such as they own all of patents about Unix), the later is known for its habit to eliminate its competitors greatly misusing its monopoly (see Netscape in the 90s or Apple in the 80s)
It is true that the _license_ of Linux is “liberal” – you can use, copy, redistribute and even modify it freely. Now, I don’t know what “liberal” means politically in the USA, but: is _this_ kind of “liberality” evil? Is it evil that I don’t sell my program but instead I give it to everybody? Compare it to Microsoft which you praised in your article: It is somewhat better now, but in the late 90s they simply forced their users to upgrade and upgrade (and buy) to their latest product by not disclosing the formats of their products (like Word) and making it incompatibile with each other. They are also well known for violating the open standards (like CSS in Internet Explorer) which is also “good” for eliminating smaller competitors by “talking” a similar but different language on the web (and because 95% of the users use Microsoft softwares everybody thinks that the competitor is buggy, and not IE…)
2. I simply cannot understand this kind of Christianity. You have one basic theory (liberality is evil, for example), and once you labeled somebody or something you don’t really know as “liberal”, you immediately damn it as “evil”. Then, you look for information supporting this idea (that the thing or man is evil), you find things you know even less (like eMac :) or the case of SCO) and completely ignore FACTS that are against this idea (like Linux is really free and in the beginning nobody earnt money from it – it was really a pet project and a generous gift to the community). You make statements in your website which are simply _not true_ just because you had a bad supporting theory (Linux is evil) for your basic theory (liberality is evil) and you did not see, you _did not want to see_ the whole truth.
So please, look at Matthew 7:1 for a moment…

(1) Source code is NOT obsoltete, it’s very useful and maybe it used to be carried on magnetic tape but now it’s called a hard drive :)
Source code is actually the source of what binaries are made out of – So before you say it’s obsolete thing remember that even your precious Windowz binaries ARE made from the original source code!
(2) You can’t have a GUI to a kernel, it’s the base of a system that does things like memory allocation. And no, it’s not cmd.exe and in Linux it doesn’t provide ‘dir’ and ‘more’. That’s the coreutils package.

It is a fully competent, highly advanced Desktop and Server OS with a fully graphical interface that is far more advanced than even Vista’s Aero Glass. Can you change you start button to anything you want in Vista? No, but you can in Linux. And the Linux command line has hundreds of built-in commands, almost all more powerful and more functional than a Windows DOS prompt.
But all this would just make me mad that there are Americans as stupid and ignorant as you. But that is normal as I experience that every day. What gets me is that you say you blog for God, Christ and George W Bush, all great people (or spiritual entities, whatever you want). I am a Catholic Republican, and a very conservative Republican at that. And you embarass the Republican Party and all Christians.

But WordPress is Open Source, the movement that was made realistic by Linux and Linux Torvalds Richard Stallman, the two men whos’ photos are near the top of your page. The web server you use runs Linux, and in looking at their page I see several things: They use MySQL for database services. MySQL developed on Linux and runs best on Linux. And about the Linux word processors: eMac was computer created by Apple. Emacs was a simple command-line word processor for Linux during Linux’s early years. Now, we have several excellent wordprocessors:

And every Windows application starts as source code, then gets turned into binaries. The same is in Linux. It just depends on when it is compiled into binary. Distributing programs as source is actually an advantage. When you compile it into binary by yourself on your computer, the program is configured specifically for your individual PC, resulting in better performance. When someone else compiles it, even in Windows, performance can suffer because of a binary compiled on another machine. But distributing source for windows never made much sense as Windows has no built-in compiler, whereas Linux does. And many Linux programs are availible as precompiled binaries, either in .deb or .rpm format, depending on your version. You cannot criticize the open Source movement for distributing source on magnetic tape. Everything was magnetic tape or floppies back then, now we use Internet, CDs, etc and store it on a hard drive.
Linux users are not criminals, we are just the same as Windows users, just a little smarter. Intelligence doesn’t make you a criminal, although I’m sure you wish it did as you’d never have to worry about jail. There is nothing criminal about Linux users.

I have Linux on my two desktops at home and most of our servers at work. Commercial software development is very important to my career, but Microsoft itself has really accomplished very little in the past 6 years. They’ve spent all this time looking for ways to fight off open source without spending money on making better products. They’ve hurt a lot of customers in the process, and some (like me) now use competing software, as is to be expected under capitalism. I’d vote Libertarian if I thought they had a chance.

Firstly, Brent, I understand your need of defending yourself and your country. I respect your opinions and your knowledge of modern history and IMO you seem to be a nice and inteligent person.
Regarding political systems, however, you might need to do some more studies. I’m from Sweden, by the way, another country who was not destroyed by the WWII and therefore able to use the situation to it’s benefit which lead to a massive build up regarding the swedish economy. This is of course due to the fact that the swedish government turned coward and allowed the germans to move troops through our country so we could avoid being drawn in to the war (even so, there actually were quite a few swedes who disagreed with this and had a jolly good time shooting at the passing trains and so forth, my grandfather was one of them)
I think what Kristian was trying to point out was that there are quite a lot of socialistic democratic systems in the world today. Socialism isn’t communism, dear Brent. Communism is a form of Socialism. As of today, the by far largest part of our government consists of the Socialistic Democratic party. That does, of course, not make my country a communist one, I hope you agree. Sweden is still a democracy, we do have elections and the Prime Minister is not a dictator (however much he tries to be, the bastard). Our elections differ from the U.S.A’s though.
In my opinion the american way regarding elections isn’t properly democratic, due to the elector system that’s used. But that’s just an opinion. As far as I know, the only real democratic country in this world is Switzerland. They use Direct Democracy. All voters have the right to vote in every issue. I would prefer that system here as well, instead of Representative Democracy that both Sweden and the US uses.
The swedish socialistic way just makes sure that all the people pay a lot of taxes that are distributed (or misplaced) back to the people through our welfare system (which of course really needs a huge upgrade). It’s probably not the best system in the world. It is however both socialistic and democratic. But not communist.
I must admit that I am very fond of communism. I like the idea. To bad we haven’t seen it implemented yet. There have of course been a couple of devastating trials, such as in China, the old U.S.S.R, Cuba and so forth. My guess is, that in present day, communism is an utopia. This might change, some time in the future (probably a long way off).
Lastly, I like you, so please don’t bash me now.
In response, I appreciate your honesty. I am not saying that all socialism is communist, nor is it always bad, at least in extreme circumstances. After all, it was in fact, socialism that saved America from the Great Depression. I do realize the difference between communism and socialism.
I myself, am a Libertarian. As such, I believe in social liberties, as well as minimal government interference in everyday life. This also includes minimal taxation. I believe in capitalism, and free trade overall.
Obviously, there needs to be some collective treasury, for the benefit of all, for certain services. Some of these services include the military and police. Others include infrastructure such as roads, waterways, and other such public services. Still others include schools, libraries, and parks.
However, a socialistic welfare state is completely different from what I have described. The socialistic welfare state is a planned economy system, in which government regulates the industries of goods and services. They plan and set prices, rather than allow market competition and consumer spending to determine prices.
It is my personal belief that everyone can and must contribute to society as a whole. But these earnings that I earn are mine to keep. Whatever someone else earns is theirs to keep (I am trying to keep this explanation as simple as possible, for those who might be confused).
I do not see the fairness in forcing me to give a large part of my personal earnings to the state to divvy up as they see fair.
America is not a democracy. It never has been in its entire existence as a sovereign nation. We are instead a representative republic.
I honestly will never understand the point of high taxation, only to redistribute it back, other than to say this: Take from the wealthy (what they earned) and give to the non-wealthy (what they didn’t earn). Obviously, things that everyone will use such as roads and other public services (including security) are an exception, because all will benefit from them.
In my opinion, the only excuse for receiving welfare assistance from the national treasury should be for those who otherwise cannot earn on their own, such as invalids/handicapped, and young/new families trying to get established (temporarily).
Welfare should only be a permanent solution to the handicapped. All others should only receive assistance temporarily, perhaps through a loan system. I say this, because I borrowed money from the government for college, and have been expected to pay it back. So how is it be fair that I have to pay back money, but not someone else; someone who isn’t even contributing back to society, but instead taking advantage of it, due to other peoples contributions?
The problem as I see it is not that there is a welfare system, but that it is totally corrupt, and money is widely mishandled. There are some in our system who do not work at all, in their entire lives. Instead they live on welfare, and yet blame others for their poverty. I do not see how it is my fault that someone else refuses to work, as I do.
The achievement of earning a living is a personal choice that only individuals can make. Reliance upon others to live, is the absence of personal choice.
I suppose you and I differ on ideas of what utopia is. My utopia is where everyone contributes to society, and government’s only role is for basic infrastructure. I hate the idea of my hard earned dollars going to the government. I hate it. I do it because it is the law. I don’t do it because I feel sorry for anybody. I contribute to charities on my own. I don’t need a government to tell me to which charity I must contribute.
I see that some need help. There is a huge difference between receiving help, and mooching.
Most people on welfare in America, are those who refuse to work!
Just to let you know, there is no such thing as utopia, a perfect society, or anything of the such.
Perfection is non-existent. It is only a fantasy of the wishful.
Personal success and achievement is the fulfillment of goals and hard work.
I’ll take personal achievement over government [assistance] any day of the week.
Personally, I find it insulting that someone thinks that they can do a better job of running my life and my finances than can I, myself.
Hopefully, I have articulated this in a way which some of you, primarily Europeans who actually wish for communism, will understand.
Also remember, that there has never existed a communist government which has ultimately been successful. Planned governments don’t work, because they disallow individual talents to emerge and blossom on their own (destiny).
Since this thread is actually about Linux, I’d just like to add that I am very impressed and satisfied with Ubuntu 6.06, Dapper.
Linux sure has come a long way, since I first started, with Red Hat 7 (Red Hat is an American company by the way), in college.
I do see a desktop market beginning to emerge here in the States as well. I do believe that it will be several years, however people said the same thing about Microsoft and Apple, years back.
In this day and age, things change so fast. It is ideas and intuitions which will ultimately succeed in the 21st century. Brands and labels will only take technology so far today. Ideas are what truly matter for tomorrow.

For one, a kernel isn’t used to accept typed commands. A shell does that. A kernel schedules other tasks and provides services to them. Under MS-DOS that was msdos.sys and some other file — I think control.sys IIRC. Under Windows it’s mainly the aptly named kernel32.exe file.
Second, RMS wrote EMACS, not the eMac, which is an Apple computer. The reason RMS says Linus didn’t write the whole OS is because Linus wrote the kernel, and many other people wrote the other programs — starting before there was a free kernel. See the FSF website. Oh, and RMS is Richard M. Stallman — that’s public knowledge.
Also, EMACS is not the only text editor or word processor that runs on Linux. Nedit, vim, vi, elvis, joe, TeX, LyX, and many others are very useful tools.
You keep using the word “hacker” as a pejorative. They way Linus, ESR, and RMS use the word, it does not mean what you are trying to make it mean. Oh, and ESR is Eric Steven Raymond. That’s also public knowledge.

Source code is the format you use to transfer tyhe knowledge behind the software. Binary packages are the format the computer uses to run the software. Source code is what humans give a compiler to produce binaries. That’s the only difference. If source code was obsolete, it would mean that no more software could ever be written by humans.
The SCO case is falling aprt in court. Over two-thirds of the claims SCO made have been thrown out in hearings before they can even be argued. The judges have expressed concern that SCO seems to have little in the way of evidence even for what is still in question.

As much as I disagreed with most of what was said in this article, I wanted to correct those of you who are saying Darl McBride is not a Christian because he is Mormon. Mormons are very much Christian, hence the name (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints). This does not, as the article implies, mean that everything he says should be believed. I couldn’t be bothered wading through all the back water crap from hicksville USA so I’m just going to skip on down to add my thoughts/observations.
1) I’m currently posting this from my SuSE Linux systems, graphical output of 24bit colour.
2) I’m also using a ’secure’ (moreso than anything Micro$oft has produced in the last 12 years since it started producing web browsers) browser.
3) Vista “the most secure windows ever” as it has been labelled, which just so happened to be the same label Windows XP got, and we all know how that turned out. Anyway Windows Vista has adopted many *nix ways of thinking/performing actions, and even with their hot shot development team of over paid graduates Vista has FAILED. It has failed to reach its release date 2 times at least from memory, M$ has also failed to release a stable beta verson for any user to test that hasn’t had holes and memory leaks out the wah-zoo (memory leaks which I might add Windows XP still has).
4) I seem to remember the release of the ‘all-powerful’ Windows XP OS, and the fatal exception call or BSOD as is commonly known, this also goes for Windows Media Centre, Windows 98, and if you will allow XboX (not a PC OS so to speak, but XboX is based on ‘current’ desktop technology and not dedicated hardware (more akin to Nintendo)).
I’d also like to add as an end note, your all seeing and all knowing Micro4oft spat on the internet saying (paraphrased) that it would never be and anything and was a passing trend… yep… passing trend, good job Micro$oft, continue making sub-standard software and poor decisions and without a doubt the world is going to falls to the comunist Linux.

Does anyone believe this nonsense? SCO has no credibility. SCO is one of the top ten most hated companies in America. None of SCO’s years of pointless legal issues has resulted in anything credible. SCO stock is at about one dollar and the company is in danger of being delisted. Did the screwed up author happen to mention perhaps SCO wants to steal Linux? Did the screwed up author point out SCO was attempting to terrify people into buying a Linux license (just look at SCO’s own site, you can find the forms there).
Software is big money. The free software model favors the technical types and defeats the under-achieving manager.
As far as Linux being developed by hackers; that is a rather broad insult enveloping thousands of volunteers worldwide.

I’m a VB.Net software developer. And from experience with both Linux distributions and every version of MS Windows since Win95 I can say that Microsoft software is utter crap. Their .Net framework is a poor copy of Java. Also, I see this site is made using Wordpress…? And why does Netcraft show this when I try to see what OS this site is running on?

From what I read, I admit to stopping after the first few paragraphs, that you are either a pathological liar or an idiot.
1) cmd.exe is a command shell. An interface to execute commands such as dir, etc. Kernel typically referes to the control program which manages the distribution of system resources to running tasks, such as cmd.exe or dir.
2) Linus is the father of the Linux OS and is not one of 3 people who sinle handedly developed Linux. Linux has evolved from a relatively simple kernel and OS into what it is today based on the contribution of tens possibly hundreds of thousands of developers who felt compelled to contribute their time and exertise. Linus initially screened contributions and approved what new features and capabilities would be officially included but by no means was responsible for developing every aspect of the OS.
3) SCO was not the initial developer of Unix. The initial Unix OS was developed at ATT Labs as an experimental OS. Source was distributed to Universities initially and all modern Unix derivations are based upon the priniciples introduced by this Unix. SCO developed their own version of this OS based on licensed source from AT&T and later purchased the Unix name. Linux, as the name illudes to, is based on the same OS priciples as Unix but initial development was done by Linus while at university.
I’ll stop here, because three strikes and you’ve proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are ignorant and unable to use a computer to verify your facts. But then you are not interested in facts. You are interested in spready fear, uncertanty and doubt amongst those that would take you as being someone who is in the know. I can’t say for sure your motives for doing this but I will take an educated guess that it is so you can have control over them and feel more comfortable in your own inadequacies and the fear that you may be wrong in your personal, social, political or religious beliefs.
