Video Games: Criminal training for liberal teens
From time to time, we at the Shelley The Republican blog like to salute the true patriots who defend our nation against the onslaught of liberal tyranny. Not all of our heroes are famous like George Bush and Anne Coulter. We also like to pay our respects to the little guy who takes the fight directly to those who would corrupt our nation. Friends, Jack Thompson is such a person.
Jack modestly describes himself as a Patriot, a Christian and a Republican. Those of us who appreciate his work know that he is so much more. In addition to being one of the most senior attorneys in Florida and a noted criminologist, he has been a tireless pro-family values lobbyist. He is a fierce opponent of pornographic rap-music, and the leading campaigner against the latest kid’s craze: Video Games.
Jack campaigns against products like this, a video game called “Evil Residence”. It is marketed at kids, but contains satanic themes and shows a gravely irrisponsible use of firearms.
Video games systems like Nintendo’s “Playstation” are marketed at kids. Outwardly they appear to be cube-like toys with a fat child-friendly carying handle. Like cartoons, video games are intended as children’s entertainment, but unlike cartoons video games often include dangerously adult themes:
Jack began his solo battle against the video game industry in 1998 when the European video game company, “Take Two” released a game called “Grand Theft Auto”. Not knowing how they might market such a violent game, the publisher initially advertised it to British “Soccer Hooligans” and “Larger Louts”. It soon became popular amongst European criminals. They used it as a criminal training simulator.
This game uses state of the art 3D-graphics to immerse your child in a world of crime. The game computer teaches kids to push drugs, steal cars and use the services of prostitutes, all to the corrupting beat of a porn-rock soundtrack.
Technicians working for Jack discovered a hidden feature or “mod” for the Grand Theft Auto game called “Hot Coffee” This took the form of a sequence where the player earns points by committing felonies (e.g. Murder, Rape, Carjacking). If the player achieves enough “felony kudos points” then he is rewarded by an explicit homosexual pornographic sequence.
This was not the only game from Take Two containing a hidden pornographic mod. For example a year later the same company released “Elder Scrolls Oblivion”, a Live Playing Game or LPG that once again invites the player to brawl and worship false-gods in a medieval fantasy inspired world.
Oblivion also included a hidden mod that made all of the characters naked. Sexually explicit content is often used to sell video games, such as the game “Dead or Alive” shown above. Video games often appear harmless, but contain hidden pornography mods.
It will hardly come as a surprise that Jack discovered that the tragic incident at Columbine high-school was also caused by video game nudity:
The two kids who went on a murderous rampage through their school had been inspired and educated by violent and sexually explicit video games. If only the games industry had learned something from this tragedy, then the evil “Trenchcoat Mafia” might have grown up to be normal Christian teens.
Last year Jack took a case on behalf of parents of a murdered child. Their son had been killed by a gang that was addicted to video games. Naturally, the video game companies denied all responsibility, but With names like Doom, Castle Wolf, Evil Residence and Nightmare Creatures, it is not surprising that games were once again responsible for transforming a normal boys into desensitized killing machines.
The victims of the video game industry are too many to count. Next time you pass a video game shop, please spare a thought for Jack Thompson, defender of the innocent souls, terrorized by games. This good man needs our support and prayers.

A few mistakes here, if I may:
The playstation is not a Nintendo product, but a Sony product.
Grand theft auto is not a 3D game. Well, at least the first wasn’t.
(by the way, Microsoft was VERY PROUD to announce at the latest video game conference that they had the exclusivity of the latest GTA. unfortunatly, it wasn’t the case, and they made fools of themselves)
No need to censor that DOA image, they are only in swimsuits. But maybe kids aren’t allowed in swimming pools or at beach?
A few errors in the game names, too: it’s “return to Castle Wolfestein” and “resident evil”.
I will add that most of these games are adult-rated, meaning they are not to be sold to or played by children (complain about it at your local video game shop).
I would just add one thing: be careful, all those games are best-sellers. And knowing that every child who play any of these games will automatically become a serial killer, no one will be safe tommorow

So for all you lovely Reps out there: If you really want to change something in your country you should start with restricting the usage of firearms to only authorised personell like cops. Look how easy you can get a weapon in the States and you know the primary answer for all your gun-related violence.
Second: You should start using a rating system for Videogames and Movies that is enforced by the gouvernment like we have it in germany. If a Game is rated “adults only” you can only buy it legally as an adult and if it is too violent or the goal of the game is just the killing (like in the Game “Hit Man”, where you play a killer that is being hired for different jobs) then it can even be banned from advertising, so nearly noone will know about it.

Shelley, I have been following your blog for a few months now, and whilst I may not entirely agree with your all your views.
But I’m more concerned for your apparent lack of research (without any references I may add), which is obvious from the number of mistakes visible. To make a statement, it is always wise to backup your statements with true and well researched material.
Also more concerning is your mismatched ethics. Specifically in this post you mention that is a kid commits murder because of a computer game, then it is the developer at fault not the kid. But, in a previous post, you said that if someone kills another with a gun, it not the gun maker at fault, but the person using it. Surely in both cases the ethics are conflicting. Is it the person who commits the murder, or the manufacturer of the device used?
Whilst violent computer games (not all games are though) can contribute to the influence put on the users, computer games can’t be hold responsible for their users. Surely this is the responsibility of the parents? If you want someone to blame for when a kid commits a crime; it should be the kid’s parents!
As a player and a video game lover, I must tell you that the video games used as examples in this article are not so relevant.
The more violent video games I’ve ever played are Manhunt and Condemned – Criminal Origins.
Doom is a good example of a violent game but the third opus well called Doom 3 and his little Brother Quake 4 are better. Doom 3 and Aerea 51 (in which one can hear Marylin Manson’s voice) gather satanic values. The game Soldier of fortune enable the player to dismember his victims. The game Counter Strike (probably the most played game ever) trains kids to shoot people in the head as a reflex.
It’s true that mods enables people to watch nude girls in GTA San Andreas and in Dead or Alive Beach Volley. This fashion started with a mod for Tomb Raider called Nude Raider which enabled to play the whole game controling a nude Lara Croft. The game Ferenheit (an other very good game) contains explicit sexual sequences. The “hot coffee” mod for GTA SA doesn’t contain homosexual sex sequence and GTA SA has an “adult only” rating. The regular version of The Sims 2 contains hetero and homosexual sex, and even sex with alien and is intended for 13 years old players.
Mafia and the GTAs are good criminal teachings but they are pretty innocent compared to Carmaguedon in which the players earns money and points by driving over citizens. There are also games called Hitman in which kids can learn how to become a killer.
About terrorism, the Microsoft game Flight Simulator enable kids to learn plane aproach trajectories to the Wold Trade Center or any other building in most American Cities.
To conclude, I must tell you about the marvelous Postman which laugh at each american traditional value.

Thanks very much, after reading your comments I have been convinced that I should never play another video game ever. I would like to point out the following that I have realised due to this blog post.
I shall never again play sports games because I believe that I am cruelly hurting the ball and I may be hurting the innocent players. It has also convinced me to stop playing real sports for the same reasons. I soon shall become an obese and unfit person, thank you.
I have stopped playing driving and racing games now as I feel that I may be polluting the virtual environment with the gasses that the vehicles emit, it would be a shame for the game characters to suffer from the effects of global warming in a few decades due to my pleasure of driving. This has convinced me never to use a motor powered vehicle again. As a result I cannot reach my job destination and I will soon be unemployed due to my extended unscheduled leave of abscence. Similarly I have stopped playing flight simulation games as I believe they encourage mass fuel consumption and terrorism.
I used to be keen on simulation games such as Sim City, I have stopped playing these as I realise that where there are large corporations and populations, there is corruption and I would hate to think that the quiet area that I live in now could turn into such a horrible place. I have also stopped playing agricultural sims and I hope soon to be suffering from survy through the lack of vitamin C as I will not be growing any fruit trees anymore as it is what these agricultural simulations encourage. Animal nurturing simulations are played no more as I believe they may encourage me to care for real animals. I pray for an exponential increase in the rate of animal species becoming extinct.
I have stopped playing puzzle games also as I believe that it may encourage me to stimulate my brain. I fear that my eventual superior intellect will end in myself building a nuclear weapon by hand from recycled materials and use it to hold the world ransom. I also do not play educational games for the very same reason, I may become educated.
I have stopped playing virtual card games (and also real card games) as I believe that I might end up becoming a gambling addict and will spend my entire winnings on liquor, prostitutes, expensive jewellery, fire-arms and ozone destroying, fast motorised cars. As a result of not playing these games I hope to become an anti-social hermit living on top of a nearby mountain living off of nearby grass and the (hopefully) nearby stream. Infact, I may live in a cave as I believe the sun is evil as it allows plants to grow where they will be used in creating roads, buildings and many retail products accross the globe, and as you know roads have evil motorised vehicles on them, buldings are full of the educated and retail products encourage capitalism and therefore financial corruption.
I now loathe music related games thanks to your blog. I realise that dancing games require excersise, something that I am now against thanks to my previous comments on sports games. I also find that the music played in these games may encourage young ones to go out and buy these compact discs thus feeding the large corporatins that produce these dics, as well as creating a demand for the discs that are being created from unrecycled materials. As a result I think all music should be banned, as well as films as these also appear on digital video dics, or DVDs as I’m told they are more widely called. Due to this, I would also like to boycott all television for the above reasons, also I may accidentally be entertained.
To conclude, I now require a entertainment free life and will hopefully get to the point where I am a completely soul-less shell of a person with no social skills whatsoever and actively dismiss the company of close ones such as my family and others. I hope that your next step in global politics will be to follow in Hitlers footsteps and promote a master race of human beings.

How come every time you write something, no matter the subject, it is full of blatant mistakes, or, to be more precise, lies? It seems you actually do some minimal reasearch on any given subject but take great care in using false information in your articles, just to be sure people are going to react in the face of your ignorance. Even a kid would make less mistakes than you. You are running a website, you have access to the world wide web, but with all this information available you still manage to tell us so many lies. Do you only know the existence of a website named “wikipedia” where you could have checked many “facts” used in your article? Really? I personally don’t believe opinions can really be accounted for, even if they’re disagreed with, because yeah, everyone is entitled to their own. However, your facts that back up your opinions need to be validated, quoted, referenced, or at least correct. If you go to http://www.us.playstation.com, you’re going to see the SONY logos down at the bottom. Not Nintendo. Your article on podcasts was also full of holes. I work for Apple, I have for a few years now (yep, dirty liberal here supporting the minds of children being polluted with the satanic wealth of knowledge available to children through podcasts) and when iPods were first being made, trust me, podcasts were not a hidden feature, they didn’t exist. Wikipedias being Communist? How? They’re free sources of information specific to one topic, similar to encyclopedias in a library.
As someone that is proficient in all 3 Mac OS, Windows, and Linux, your article about how linux was evil and dangerous was hilarious…it’s just an operating system, and there’s no need for antivirus software because it’s pretty secure all by itself. I did tech support for Microsoft, cleaning out spyware, viruses and browser hijacks for almost a year. The amount of patches and additional software needed to safely use Windows is rediculous. So why not use linux? Sure, you have to learn a bit more in order to use it, but why is that a bad thing?
My Grandmother’s largest piece of advice to me was that knowledge really was power…never shut yourself out to learning about something. Learn as much as you possibly can in school, because knowledge is never a waste. My biggest conflict with most Christians is that they are one-sided and refuse to even listen to another point of view and are completely intolerant of others that share differences (homosexuality, other religions, nationalities, social status, financial woes). My Grandmother, on the other hand, was a Christian that was not only a democrat, but also someone that really believed and thoroughly followed the teachings of Christ and the Christian God: tolerance, acceptance, forgiveness, love…I’ve abandoned the Christian faith because I feel the fundamental beliefs have become so distorted from the ways I was taught from my Grandparents, however I have not abandoned its fundamental principals, which were noted above.
Basically my suggestion is to prove your facts before trying to validate your articles…and at least consider the grey areas instead of automatically looking at only the black and the white. The world does not exist in such extremes. Speech and Debate were not classes I excelled in, however, backing up and fully researching your facts and statements was the most valuable piece of advice I took with me.

Most media reports say violent behavior may be rooted to video games. The truth of the matter is, it comes from everywhere and the games are getting the heat because it’s something new. The Columbine incident may have been influenced slightly by violent videogames (which is, in the first place, should not be in their posession due to their age. Parental supervision? Absent), but a major factor may be because they’re not loved enough, they’re neglected, they’re bullied, and all other causes of why a child or teen turns delinquent. There was this one indcident when me and my older friends (whom are sales associates in game stores) wonder why videogames take heat from the media when most of the time when the person who did the crime (we are discussing the criminal who became the reason why the game “Manhunt” was banned) was “unbalanced” in the first place, before the game was even released (he was well-known for harrassing sales people like the game store sales associate friends I have mentioned earlier)
The real solution to this video game problem is not to consider it a problem at all. Rating systems should be enforced, parents should guide their kids (like what they’re supposed to do in the first place), and to stop sensationalizing something that may be considered a work of art, and entertainment, a pleasure, an enjoyment, a hobby and a social activity called “videogames”. It’s hard to imagine if you’ve never played one before, but like the hula hoop, the yo-yo, the boogaloo, disco, the mullet, rock music, and many more fads and enjoyments in the past, videogames will become a part of the land of the free.
Interesting to know, but a mod developed for the US army came out not long ago. It’s helping troops on the ground learn to communicate with Iraqi citizens, you know, prevent civil war and stuff? :)
The mod was made for a game called Unreal Tournament 2004, a game entirely based on shooting “to kill” other players online. :)
I rather like the idea that the US army though it was a suitable game to mod for their training.

The Kids in Columbine had been bullied in school by other kids as they didn’t fit the Peer’s idea of “Normal”. Video games had nothing to do with it. Just because they played Doom doesn’t mean they copied it and the only people who could tell you would be the kids who commited the vile, shooting.
I’m a 21 year old,European Gamer (Oh no, satan personified in your opinion). In the UK, we have Age Restricted games and it works! We don’t have young kids buying 18+ games. Their parents can choose to and more often than not, won’t buy them. I, personally, don’t enjoy “Resident Evil” or “Castle Wolfenstein”. I’d prefer to play a Motor Sport game or a Proper Football game (Pro Evolution Soccer et. al).
While games like RE and RTCW are violent, they haven’t got needless killing in them. RE has the plot where you are fighting for your life and the life of others where as RTCW is a fight against the Nazi Regieme. GTA is a free-roaming game where you don’t have to do any mission. You can become a Taxi Driver, Vigilante, Fireperson or Ambulance Driver. You don’t even have to do that.
Please, get your facts right before you start to have a go at the gaming industry. Its clear you don’t have the facts to form a coherant arguement

Im pretty happy I found this blog. I have been on the internet for many years already, and I thought it was all full of sex, blasphemy and pedophilians.

I just want to tell you, your absolutly right it really is a training tool. I too, punched someone off their motor-bike after out-running it for 6 city blocks. Then i turned around twice and jumped once then looked up, a bazoka appeared. Needless to say i shot everyhting in sight, including an ambulance a police car and a tank. After receiving a dozen bullets in the chest i walked over to a health pack and got healed just by touching it. Then, after i got 4 little stars, the police stopped chasing me and i did it all over again.

The first game image is not from “Resident Evil” (Not “Evil Residence”), but from “Manhunt”.
Nintendo did not make the “Playstation”, and the “Playstation” is not cube-shaped. You’re thinking of the “GameCube”.
“Grand Theft Auto” used very little 3D graphics, and mostly used 2D sprites. The Hot Coffee mod is not in “Grand Theft Auto”, but in “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas”. Also, Jack Thompson nor his “technitions” found that mod. You cannot view “Hot Coffee” without a patch, and it is not homosexual nor explicit.
Take Two did not develop “The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion”. That was Bethesda Softworks. LPG is not a real genre either. It’s an action RPG (Role-Playing Game). Oblivion does not have a hidden nude mod, however users have made their own mods for the game that can replace textures in the game that appear nude.
Nudity does not make people kill. If so, then I myself would be a serial murderer (Which I am not).
There is no game called “Castle Wolf”. You are thinking of “Castle Wolfenstein”. And again, “Evil Residence” is not a game.
In short, you are horrible at research. You get a “D-”.

I can’t believe how people think Video games are the work of Satan. That is not true. You just need to shut your traps. Video games aren’t at all religious. Video games are meant to entertain, and nothing more.
Video Games are not the fault of violence in America today. Parents are also at fault. They don’t care about what the kid watches, plays, or whatever. They only care about them being ‘happy,’ so they buy them whatever. But parents don’t understand the concept of the rating system. Parents, the Rating System is there for a reason, but you’re too lazy to ready the one single letter there that tells you if the game is suitible for your kids or not.
Even if Video games are somewhat the reason for violence today, they only remain at 1, maybe 5% the cause. Look at other media that parents let their kids watch. Horrible, bloody, and violent movies, dark themed books, and they even let their kids go to a friends house without knowing anything about that friend.
How do the bad games even get into the kids consoles? Parents. Parents are the people who will buy the games for their kids without looking at the ratings. Parents are the people who don’t give a crap about what their kids play or watch as long as they’re entertained. Then, when the kid is all changed, the parents blame the game or the company. Now… again, how did the game get their? THE PARENTS!!!
Some of the places that sell the games are almost as bad. They don’t even let the parent know about the ratings on the games when the parent buys the game. They seem to assume that since the parent is buying the game, it’s OK. But parents hardly know anything about the rating system. The stores that sell games need to start letting parents know the contents of the game, letting the parents know the rating of the game and why it’s rated that, and they need to let the parents understand what the game will contain as the player progresses.
Parent’s, you need to learn how to read the ratings, understand the ratings, and understand what the game or movie will most likily contain, instead of just buying a game or movie just to keep your kids entertained.
Yeah video games cause the violence to be done by the stupid kid who’s stupid parents buy the game the kid shouldn’t be playing in the first place. They have a rateing for a reason you know. Let’s not forget that the parents should be teaching the kid that they shouldn’t copy what they see in games.
