Conservative Action : Hope for America (A letter from my Sister)
Dear Readers
I just recently received a letter from my sister, Rebecca, which I have permission to publish here. She is a wife and mother (like I am myself) and she lives close to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, by the way the most Godly state in America. Abortions are virtually illegal there and I am proud to say that my sister Rebecca did her part in reaching this goal. No innocent child is murdered there through abortions, I am proud to say. Back to the letter: It pretty much speaks for itself and brings an uplifting message of hope and compassion for America with it.
(note that she refers to “Cindy” in her letter – that is her 11 year old daughter)
Dearest Shelley
I hope you are well, we haven’t spoken for some time now. How are the children? Are you still so active in your church group? You know what they say: Idle Hands Are The Devil’s Tools!I would like to tell you about what happened in the last months. Cindy came home from school the other day and was crying and scared and somehow completely confused, you know that is not the way she normally acts, this precious little child I love so much. You will fully understand that I was determined to find out what this was about and it is not like me to let something like this go without becoming active!
After I asked her what has upset her so much she replied that their teacher, a strange man with the name Mr. Lichfield, told the children about the THEORY of evolution. After Mr. Lichfield explained what evolution is supposed to be my dear Cindy was quick to reply that there is no such thing as evolution because God and God alone created the earth and created all plants and also created animals and humans. The teacher this unGodly man more or less laughed about this and told her: “Listen Cindy, you are now old enough to know the truth. There might very well be a God but all life on earth has been created through natural selection and evolution.” He was going on how religion was nothing more than “superstition”!
I don’t have to tell you that children are cruel and very soon she had the whole class against her and you know my Cindy, she is a strong willed, smart child. She brings a lot of joy and goodwill for all the people around her. All the more I was angry, as you can imaging. I was not sitting still for a minute until we had this resolved. The very same day I contacted all the parents I know and also the principal. Most of the parents were on my side right away but I had a hard time with the principal, I can tell you that. He is not quite a liberal, but is not… well, just not American enough, you know what I mean. I also suspect he might be gay.
To make a long story short, we demanded that this man, this terrible little man, Mr. Lichfield, should be fired. We called the school board and demanded a decision! A couple of concerned parents were in front of this teachers house every evening, holding up signs and shouting that he should leave for good because this, by God, is a Godly community!
I am happy to say that it took us only one month and he was fired and left the area! I can not tell you how happy we were! It’s was wonderful. I wish you would have seen this with your own eyes, which reminds me that you really have to come by for our 4th of July barbecue!
Oh Shelley, once again it proves that one should not just sit by and watch but be active. Activism if more important today as it every was, but I don’t have to tell you this. By the way, I visit your blog every day. I print the articles I like the most and give them to friends, relatives or just people I meet on the street. Everybody loves it and almost everybody agrees with your vision for a better America. You are serving your country well.

So, if both are a faith question, why is as easy for you to believe in one of them and discard the other? I can’t even begin to express how dismayed I am by this post. This is parody, right? Otherwise your neice is being denied her education by your sister’s actions. Now instead of your neice being able to evaluate the (vast) arguments in favour of the scientific view of life on earth, and make her own mind up, she’s being kept in a state of intelectual purdah by her family and her community.
Was the enlightenment for nothing? Do you have no idea what the word “theory” means in a scientific context? Do you not care that your neice is being denied her right to learn about the history of the earth, as based on evidence and critical, rational thought? Or are you happy for her to base her entire understanding of life on,one of many, creation myths?
I mourn for your neice, and for your sister’s community. When one person declares herself arbiter of the morals of a community, and rejects rational, enlightened thought, presecution and ignorance are the inevitable result.

I have always thought that it is important to respect other peoples believes, and I must say that I am on the total opposite of what you stand for.
Anyway, I think you are allowed your speech, but I am very sorry for the un-open attitude and hatred that you so obviously display. I think all this seems to be a great contradiction to the so-called Christian values you want to follow.
I am not a Christian myself, but a great admirer of the first ideologies that was claimed to be the words of Jesus, where love for the next person, forgiveness and warmth are one of the most important factors.

Just out of curiosity, how does referring to your religion make the poster an “America Hater”? America was [at least partially] founded on having freedom of religious persecution. Therefore, there is no single State-religion in the country. So, if someone bashes a particular religion, that should in no way mean they are basing the entire country. Please clarify, thanks.
It is a terrible thing to persecute someone for doing there job, especially when it is one as vital as teaching. To gloat and take pride in causing this man to lose his job shows a complete lack of the compassion that Jesus taught.
Also, science and religion fulfill two different roles in society and answer two different types of questions. Religion asks why are we here and how should we act. Science asks what is in the world around us and how does it work.
Science is a vital part of todays world, and to deny your niece a full understanding of what science is and how it works is to limit her potential. At least for her sake, I hope you change your views.

Evolution isn’t fact. Like it was stated in the letter, it’s a theory. But then again, nothing in science is ever “fact.” However, by the same token, Creationism is a theory. Sure there’s evidence that supports it, but there’s also evidence to support evolution. No side is inherently correct, and getting a teacher fired for teaching a scientific theory is cold-hearted and un-Christian.
But then again, why be rational when you can wallow in your own self-righteousness/ignorance?

I am 16 years old and I can write a lot better than you already. Anyways to my point, creationism is a bunch of crap. There is no scientific evidence to back it up. I learned this in my tenth grade biology class. I believe that evolution does occur, just look around there is things changing all the time. Animals are having to adapt to the changes that humans have instituted. Pope John Paul II said that evolution is just the extension of creation, it does not interfere with the belief of God. Also Darwin never said that we came from monkeys, we are just related to them. There is scientific evidence saying that we came from many different species of homo like home erctus. I’m saying that evoulution does not conflict with the belief in religion. A teacher in Minnesota can teach this, why not in South Dakota?
According to the bible the world is more or less 12 thousand years old. If you count down from adam and eve and so on and use some imagination. This leaves me with one question. Dinosaurs? Explain all the bones in the ground and zero mention of giant green lizzards in the bible.
